I checked the NHTSA website for Pontiac Solstice differential leak problems. There was only ONE complaint! One way to get GM to pay attention to this problem is to get regulatory agencies involved. Please go to the link below and report your differential leak problem. The government can only react to the complaints it receives. It is especially important to report repeated failures of the pinion seal. If you have a leak please, PLEASE, take two minutes to report this problem to NHSTA.
Although I don't have the leak YET! Blackdog this may be the best post in awhile! This type of post is where the power of the forum truly exists...I encourage anyone who has the leak to post to the site...TY BlackDog!
Not sure I understand the purpose of this either. As long as your dealer is working to fix the problem and not horsing you around what more can you ask. Poor dealer service should be reported to the better business bureau not NHSTA. Isn't the Government involved in our lives enough already?

If the rear diff fails it is a safety issue, Also GM is still putting these sol's out with a defect thats still showing up They know there is a problem with the Differential
Vin 111602 picked up 3/27/06 pinion Diff Leak 4/29/06 ,dealer repaired 3/2/06

If it drips you will see it. If it starts whining you will hear it. GM is taking care of it as it is brought to them. I have not heard of differentials locking up in any kind of traffic, let alone with out warning. It is not IMHO a "Safety" problem.

Chill out! Deal with it or trade it in for a Mazda. It's a new production vehicle for goodness sakes. It's admirable that it's not got worse problems and most dealers are bending over backwards to resove the issues. Never seen so many damned surveys wanting my feedback. Reach inside your soul and see if you can find some forgiveness, otherwise you aren't going to enjoy your experience with this car anyway.
Blackdog thanks for the listing. It's important to have alternatives should the problem persist. The dealer fixed my leak and was out the same day after the part came in. It is a new model and there will be problems. If the pinion seal fails or the casing is bad in the coming months, I will report the problem.
Thanks for all the responses. If GM were treating us properly it wouldn't be necessary to seek assistance from NHTSA. Yes, they are fixing the cars as the problem appears but there is nothing going on to prevent the problem by upgrading all the Solstices. Lots of car makers do this to prevent inconvienence to owners. It looks like GM is trying to keep the lid on this problem to avoid the bad press and the folks who actually bought the car are suffering for it.
The real reason to post this problem on NHTSA is to create a public "paper trail" that GM has to deal with. When I talked to GM customer service they don't want to hear anything about what the folks on the forum know, i.e.
1. Differential leaks are reoccuring on cars that have already been fixed once
2. The new carrier is solving the whine, the clunk and the leak at all once.
So, this isn't about whining to the government to get help. It is about showing GM that consumers who get together and communicate with each other can help them identify problems.

I think this an informative and timely thread. A very knowledgeable friend of mine had suggested the same thing after listening to my tale of woe.
He quite bluntly said: "Don't let the dealer bs you and tell you the whine is normal. Here's my cell number, call me if he does."
He also mentioned that the rear could lock up at any time; now or 10,000 miles from now. I don't want to be on the highway doing 80 when it happens.
All dealers should replace the ring and pinion gear set on these cars. My car had the leak and the pinion seal was replaced. Now I have the whine. Damage is done.
I don't see it as an issue if it's covered under warranty, that's the method for a manufacturer to deal with customer problems. If it becomes repetitive then yes something should be reported elsewhere.
