   Top Fraying Around Side Window Opening

On my '07 with headliner option, the canvas top edge binding material has frayed through where the cloth curves down around the rear edge of the side windows. Since new, the side window glass "flicks" this part of the top whenever opening or closing the doors.

I've been very happy with no leaks or wind noise so I never gave any thought to this issue. Until now, at almost the 10k mile mark, the edge binding has already worn through on this area on the driver's side.

Has anyone else noticed this already? Is there anything I should be on the lookout for when I go and have my top serviced?

I had the same problem with mine; the top was misalligned according to the dealer. They replaced the top under warranty (took about two days); no problems since.

I noticed the problem and had my top and window adjusted before the top was damaged. It is an alignment issue with either the top, the window glass or both.

If I were you, I would not mention to the dealer that you knew that this was happening but did nothing about it.

it is an issue for sure. on a lot of the 07 models there is a nylon or plastic tab the did not get put into place at the joining sections of the top frame and it has allowed the metal to wear throught he rubber and into the top fabric. Both sides on mine are worn through the first layer of fabric. The dealership has my replacement frame parts on order still but will be fixing it once they arrive. They do not do aphulstry so they will have to sub it out to a top shop to have it all done.

With your top half up push down on the rubber at the top of the rear frame rail and you should see the metal poke through.

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep my trap shut!

I actually didn't think this was a problem and was how it was supposed to work, never guessed that it would wear through. It kind of looks like the back hem of my kids' jeans now.

This problem is different, my top sits a little low over the top rear edge of the side windows so the widows rub slightly on the top each time the doors are opened or closed. At about 10,000 miles of opening and closing the doors, the top's edge binding wore through.

I checked for the tabs, they're installed on my car and it has no signs of pinch ripping from raising the top.

I am amazed, considering the complication of these fabric tops, that the problems have not been nearly universal! This does sound like a warranty issue and the dealer should handle it. By the way, I am still waiting for my new top and the parts manager is at a loss to explain why it hasn't come in yet. Can someone on the forum tell me the magic word this guy has to use to get a Lightside top shipped to Wendell, NC (you can PM me to avoid any hijack issues). Six months seems like a long time.

Getting them to rip one off the assembly line is the problem. It's been about two months now I've been waiting for the new frame parts. It took 4 and a half months to get my car repaired when I got hit last year waiting on support rail and facia parts.

Hey, at least your dealer ordered the parts. I have the same problem that you have on my 07 GXP. The dealer stated that they don't think the tearing will wear all the way through the top, so they aren't prepared to fix it yet. I guess they plan to wait until it tears through to the outside and then give me a whole new top.

My plan is to record the damage each time I am at the dealer for an oil change or other service. Believe me, I will have a good record of how the tearing has progressed long before the warranty runs out.

That's just retarded. If it's like mine there is obvious damage from more than just normal wear and tear. Sounds like the head service manager is your blocker. Ask him if he would wait for it to tear all the way through if it was his car. It is an obvious manufacturers assembly defect that must be corrected. If a tire was warn through to the wire from an incorrectly seated bolt rubbing on it would he tell the owner he won't fix it till it goes flat? Go over his head if you have too. Remind him he works in a "repair Service" department not a "selective service" department.

Have you seen this thread small dealer jsut posted? there is a great pic of the tab that we are missing causing the damage. might be the proof we need to speed them along.

Mine took about 3 months to get, they couldn't find anyone with an extra top for me so they had one built for me. After they got it at the delear it was a quick prosses.
