I had the problem on both sides. I took my car to Nyle Maxwell GMC/Pontiac in Round Rock, TX (which is not where I purchased my car.) My cupholder had also broken. They replaced it and have ordered a new top. They said they'd give me a free rental car when the top comes in. They gave me a better experience with service than the dealership that I purchased from. Kept me well informed; provided a cell # for me to reach them at anytime. Service was top-notch. I'll update more when I get the new top.
here's a little info from my dealer, I don't know if he's full of it or not;
he's going to replace my top, they tried the tab fix and that didn't do the trick
he says I can have the top fixed now, (it's not neccessary, I don't let it rip I undo the problem when I out the top up)
or I can wait for the summer when a new designed top with a differant arm is comming out
I am waiting since there is no ripping issue yet it's just inconvenient
so just to let you guys who are getting your top replaced, you might want to just document the issue and wait for the new release
I hope small dealer reads this and confirms there is a new top comming out or not
My dealer has my top and is going to install in April when she comes out of storage. I'm going to make sure it has the tab fix on it or I will put that on hold until it does.

there is a new design that might not have that tab that you are talking about, read my post above yours

how's everyone's tops doing now with the new bars? I'm about to give my dealer those part numbers SD posted and I want to make sure that if they need to order the weatherstripping with it as well.

as I refered in my post ahead of yours, my dealer would gladly replace my top but insists there is a new design comming out in august and asked me to wait
he even documented that gm was to replace the top under warrantee so he's not trying to put me off, he said he would put it on but thinks the best advice is to wait
if you can wait then I think it's a good call, just get them to document that they are going to replace it in the future
don't ask them to document when "the new design" comes out because that new design is not documented as official yet

i appreciate your opinion, but honestly i want this fixed soon, not 6 months from now. If they fix it now and it's permanent, then great. If it's not, then it's going back for another replacement and by then the "new design" will be out if infact that's true. I just wanted to know if the people that had theirs done already experienced anymore problems since it's been a few months since they've had it done. My top is ripped on both sides pretty bad, so even with the new tabs, the bars will get caught in the open ripped fabric and pinch, so the fabric has to be replaced too. I just want to be able to know which part numbers exactly to give him to help speed the process.

Glad to see GM is staying with this. I had the weather strips replaced (with tabs) and the dealer still ordered a new top (still not in as of this date {1/29/08}). The new top is ordered 'cause the rips were too scary for the upholstery shop to tackle. The new tabs were bending back a little(see other threads), so I used the Gorilla-Glue-and-tape solution offered by others to cover the rips/tears, and it seems to be working great. This is in addition to a little filing and shaping done by the dealership.

I just got my car back from the dealer yesterday with the new top. They sent it out to the Top Shop for installation. They also put in the weatherstrips with the part numbers posted above, but there are NO tabs on the ends of the new weather strips. I mentioned them to the service writer when I took it in, but they said they'd have to see what came in when they ordered parts. The service dept was closed when I picked it up, so there was no one to talk to about them. I'll stop back in there this week to talk to someone. I don't want to have to do this again next year. The New top fits and looks great. Less wrinkles for sure, but I'll bet they come back after the top has been in the trunk for a while.
On a side note, I was going to have them paint the windshield frame and hump strip while it was there, but did not. They said there was more to it than they estimated.

Take it back in and get them to put those tabs on....you are right....you will have to do this again next year. I had it done a month ago and they got it right the first time. No worries since and the top never binds.

The tabs are supposed to be on the front of the rear side rails where the top folds. There are pics in this thread of them.
I went back to the dealer yesterday. I talked to them for quite a while. I had the service rep, a salesman, and the parts guy looking at my top, as well as the top on a couple of the new '08s they have on the lot that do have the tabs. They now all understand the difference between tabs and no tabs. The part numbers for the weatherstrips where these tabs are is the same for my car and the new ones they have. The parts guy assured me that he would contact GM parts engineering to find out what it takes to get those tabs for mine. They do not appear anywhere in his computer exploded parts diagram. He said he would call me when he knows more. We'll see. Does anyone know yet how to get them?
