I have had an ongoing nightmare with my top for the last several months. Mine was originally missing the plastic slider tabs and had worn through the bottom layer of the canvas, so my dealership offered to replace the top. After waiting months for all the parts to come in, they replaced the canvas only (not the frame) and both side weatherstrips (#8 in the diagram). Not only was the top replacement botched with everything way out of alignment, they failed to install the plastic tabs that caused the problem in the first place. They ordered the weatherstrip parts again expecting the tabs to be included.

They recieved the weatherstrips packaged in a plastic bag with NO tabs. After contacting GM tech support they ordered again and got the right side in a cardboard box WITH the tab but could not get the left side in a box.

Apparently one version is made in Canada and the other in Mexico, I can't remember which is which. One is in a box with tab, the other in a plastic bag without. The real kicker is my dealership was told the plastic bag version was newer, and the box version was discontinued which is why they couldn't get the left side. As far as I know, the part numbers are the same on both.

In the end they were able to "acquire" a tab to use on the left side, so now I have both but my windows do not fit the new weatherstrip apparently. The front A pillar weatherstrip was also replaced to mate up with the new roof line strips but now the window can't be adjusted to eliminate air leaks. They've already adjusted the tip in to fix leaks at the top of the window but now there are even worse leaks at the rear edge which is not seating on the B pillar strips. GM tech support is recommeding they stuff something inside the strips to make them stiffer. Right now I'm waiting on those parts but I'm not holding my breath that it'll fix the problem.

Well, here is the latest news that I have.

My dealer has agreed that my top needs to be replaced/repaired due to the ripping issues. I was at my dealer today so they could inspect my top so they know which parts to order.

They said there were several bulletins on the top repair for the ripping issue. One was an older one regarding inspecting the weather stripping to make sure the correct one is used (document talked about a Plan A versus Plan B weather strip, and had an illustration showing what the service person should look for.) There was a VIN break point for the change, but the bulletin also mentioned inspecting the weather stripping as some VINs close to the break point may still have ended up with the old design.

The newer bulletin was regarding the top repair itself, and supposedly came out a few weeks ago. According to the parts person at my dealership, the warranty repair instructions do not call for replacing any parts (#8?) in order to install one that has the plastic tab. Current repair instructions are to cut that metal piece shorter so that it no longer contacts the top material. He did not show me a copy of this bulletin, so if Small Dealer or someone else could provide us with the details, it would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding my top, the appropriate parts should be ordered by the dealership today, and once they arrive I will schedule the repair. I expect to be without my car a day or two, as they send convertible top work out to another shop that specializes in such things.

cutting parts sounds like B/S, sounds like back yard mechanic talk because they don't know how to research it.

Dengle, the #8 was a reference to the part on gmpartsdirect.com, their parts manual will have a different #

Yeah, I know that #8 is not the GM part #. I just didn't want to search back through the thread to confirm that the appropriate part is actually the #8 being referred to in this thread. Too lazy to read back over the eight pages of replies here, that's all.

But I would like Small Dealer to look into whether or not a bulletin came out with instructions to cut down the necessary part instead of replacing it with one that has the plastic cap (or is premade to the appropriate length, for that matter).

Well, I dropped my car off at the dealer this morning. They are sending it out to a top specialist for the repair work, so it may be a day or two until I get it back.

I'll let you all know how the repair goes using the current GM procedures.
