OK - I have a 2006 NA manual 5 speed - I am getting a whine out of the rear end - only noticeable with the top up and in 5th gear between the range of 1750 - 2500 RPM - after 2500 it goes away. I have not had the recall pinion seal done yetand I have no leakage, however, replacing a seal will not cure this if it is a problem. Is this normal or should I have it looked at - it is still under waranty.

You need to follow the recall instructions, but figure that the insistent whine comes from the rear differential. Once I replaced mine (2006) with a 2008 differential, all leaks and whines ceased to be.

Funny that you don't hear it after 2500rpm. Mine was really noticable after 45mph and only decreased slightly when I took my foot of the accelerator.

Was the rear end replaced underw vwarranty because of the whine?

Apparently. The 1st thing I experienced in '06 was the leak. The dealer replaced the seal. It leaked again and the dealer claimed it was due to vent tube contamination.

A knowledgeable friend thoroughly explained that the whine indicates damage so after the third leak began, I insisted that the carrier be replaced. The dealer complied.

Use the forum's search engine to find info about rear differential.

SURPRISE! SURPRISE! SURPRISE! Took my 2006 na to the local dealer - took the service tech for a ride to hear the whine. Called today and GM is sending a new diffy.

Be sure your dealership checks to make sure the new diff has the updated pinion seal. I had the diff in my 06 na replaced about a month ago and the new one didn't have the updated pinion seal. It began leaking with less than 1000 miles on it.

Be sure to follow the break in for the new diff, then have FUN...you won't believe the difference!

yeh - I intend to do that - anyway, it really surprised me that they would bend so easily - apparently it is a problem that they don't want to do a recall on since it would cost them big time. GM has a history of decvieving their customers (and employes and retirees) like this. If it goes after the warranty then it is not their problem.

BTW - I am a salary retiree and have absolutely no loyalty to GM anymore.

Had the new diffy installed yesterday - took about 1 1/2 hours total. Not only is the whine gone but engaging gears after shifting is smoother - apparently I had the "clunk" and thought it was normal.

Because the pinion seal is a recall (voluntary not mandatory, ie they are not going to hunt you down) GM will inspect and/or replace the pinion seal even lon gafter the factory warranty is kaput. What they probably will not do is replace any other part after warranty at the time of pipnion recall performed service. There is a time limit on it, although for example if you were to get your hands on a Fiero that never had the firewall update SD had indicated a while ago that those parts were still actually available and that GM would fix. Same with Solstice/Sky/Escalade/CTS and whatever else is affected by the p.s., during warranty they may go beyond just replacing teh seal and doing the whole number - but after warranty don't expect anything more than seal.

As far as diffs in the system with old style seals, they probably do not have any way of tracking which are which - although there should have been a part # change. Or they could just still have the old ones in teh system and the dealer not knowing for certain what they could get ordered the old style and failed to inspect it prior to install.

I don't understand what point you are trying to make??

The tech said the new diffy had the new seal, having replaced several.
Soooooooooo - what are tou trying to say???

Well - the whine and clunk are gone, but now it appears to have a leak. I drove about 30 miles today and the rear bumper fascia on the outside was speckled with diff oil. I looked ubderneath and the diffy, as far as I could see or feel, was bone dry??? Anybody experience this? Where would it be coming from? There was a small amount on the rear frame crossmember.

When I first brought it home from the repair I noticed a small drip on the floor - there was a small amount dripping from the rear of the diffy - I wiped it off and it stopped.

I am thinking maybe he overfilled it??

Any thoughts out there?

I am taking it back in Tuesday - It could be the vent valve, but why is there no oil residue on the underside of the car?

Depends on which version of the vent valve they are using. One has a rubber tube runing up to the frame attached there and I think a vent valve on top of that. If they over filled it and it is venting it would shoot the grease from there.
