The primary problem is that the "enclosure" for the subwoofer is a molded plastic piece, and takes up space between the plastic interior backing, and the frame just a few inches behind it. Since you have a subwoofer, you have the monsoon system, and that has the amplifier in the same location behind the driver seat. So that makes it a little harder.
Here is my solution that I want to try out sometime. There are these things called acoustic mass shakers. They started off in cinema theater, and home theater. But nowadays they make automotive applications of them as well.
Basically, instead of a solid heavy magnet secured to the frame/chassis of the speaker with the coiled electromagnetic portion on the cylindrical part behind the cone like a normal speaker, the coiled electromagnetic portion is secured, and the heavy magnet is thrown around. So instead of a sound generator, you get a physical/thumping/vibration generator due to throwing the mass of the speaker around.
You basically take one, or two of these mass shakers, and bolt them say to the frame of your seat, and wire them up like speakers. They only need about 40W rms, and because they aren't making sound, a cheap ass amp will more then suffice.
Tap the small speaker behind the driver seat for signal, run it into a small/cheap amp, power 1 or 2 of the mass shakers, and that's about it. Kinda like adding on a sub to a stock system.

I've been in a car with this setup. It feels like a 500W sub sitting in the seat. It almost feels home theater-like in the strong/effortless kinda way a strong home/cinema theater can. Couldn't believe that was what it was. The guy at the car audio shop sold me like a sucka as soon as I tried it out.
