I just had a Kenwood Excelon DDX812 installed and two issues arose from which the installer could not correct.

The mute button on the steering wheel column does not work, and my turn signals are no longer audible.

On-star, volume/seek controls, etc are all fine.

Since the installer could not get these to work, I will touch out to this wonderful community to see if anyone else can confirm this.

so..any issues for anyone else with the steering wheel mute or turn signal volume with an after market radio??

Thanks,

Dive Instructor

What interface did he use for the steering wheel controls? PAC SWI, I have mine working with my AVIC D3, also the turn signals don't play on the radio anymore, the sound comes from a box in the dash and you can only hear it with the stero on 0

Hi Deep,

I believe he used PAC SWI..I'll check when I get home, but I recall seeing that on a sheet. It showed mute was controlled on position 3 for a Kenwood device so I thought it was straight forward.

It's not the end of the world, but it sure looks like it should work and if possible I would like it to.

There is no way to screw up the wiring since only one wire is the signal wire. There is just different levels of voltage coming from the buttons. If some are working and other aren't then it just needs re-programming.

The programming of that device is simple. If you have access to it, there is a button on the side. Start your car and then hold down the button for 3 seconds until the light on it stays solid. Then you have to touch the steering wheel controls in this order (I did a 3 count while holding each button) Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, Seek Up, Seek Down. Then you wait 7 seconds and the light blinks and shuts off. Programming is complete.

Thanks Deep, I'll find out where it's installed and see if I can do this...hopefully it's not where I think it is. :/

Mine is behind the vents so I have to pull off the o-$hit grip and lift the console, stick a hand in and push the button to program. If I had to do it over, I install it with access to the control.

soo... did u ever fix it? Ive been thinking about getting this head-unit as well, unless someone persuades me otherwise. why is it exactly that the blinker clicker doesn't sound? What do you think of your new radio?

I like the new unit. Issue is still unresolved..cant get ahold of the installer to find out where the Steering wheel interface is located. If it is located behind im screwed..if its under the dash i can do this. I contacted pacificaudio and they said there product works with Kenwood and that the mute should work.

I may take off the panel under the dash tonight and see if its there. I'll be seriously pissed off if I find it and correct the issue myself.

Deepblue said something about the turn signals dont play through the radio anymore..i guess that means there is no interface on the Kenwood for this?? It's not that big of a deal to me...the mute though...while not a big deal its becoming an issue of customer service if in fact it works and the installer said it wouldnt.

It's not under the dash....so its most likely behind the radio. I really dont want to take apart the dash..if I had wanted to I would have installed the damn thing myself.

Maybe its time I argue with my installer.

The Peripheral PESWIAKJC does work with the Solstice steering wheel controls. Took it to a different shop and under 2 hours I was happy.

Thanks deepblue for the comments.
