-On mine the playlist menu only shows a single playlist even though I have about 20. However they have some non-alphanumeric characters in them so I'm going to go back and remove these in case it fubar'd the unit. Could also be something it doesn't like in my smart playlists. Worst comes to worst I will just put my favorite songs in the one playlist I am allowed to access.
-If you press the "i" button and choose anything other than channel by mistake, feedback as to which track or menu setting you are in goes away, replaced with the advice, "press i + chan". To fix it press "i" and choose "chan".

Well at least we have a connection for the iPod .... the there should be "room" for softwear tweaking the actual interaction with the pod............. I hope

True; however, this is making me reconsider the option from Peripheral Electronics. I look forward to reading the manual for PAL. Thanks for the info and taking the time to scan it

Here is a link to the operations manual for the Peripheral Electronics setup - seems like a decent implementation but who's to say without actually testing it out.

Not sure about the problem your having with the playlists, I seem to be able to cycle through all of mine fairly easily.

That is correct, you do need to hold the steering wheel arrows for an extra second or so in order for it to switch tracks, otherwise it changes your radio station based on your favorites lists. This would probably be my only complaint, though again, once your used to it, it is only a minor annoyance.

I found the easiest way to navigate is to select the mode of search (album, artist, playlist etc...) and then hit the "ABC Search" and use the small dial to quickly locate what your looking for. Once you get used to that, navigating around is rather quick.

Playlists are definately the way to go if you like to jump around between albums alot though and this is do to the slow interface speeds of the Ipod, not the PAL. However, if you just like to put it on shuffle and set it on an artist, album or playlist, you'll have no issues there.

The PE kit is an alternative, but looking at the guide, it seems virtually identical, with perhaps a few less features (unless you have a nav radio, which none of us do).

Well I have done some more messing around with it now and realized I have to hit the "abc" softkey to scroll through playlists, so they seem to work, including smart playlists. I think I was expecting to just be able to select "playlists" and start scrolling right away with the arrow softkeys, but you have to hit "abc" first.

A couple of other observations:
-The setting that lets it automatically cycle the display between artist, title, and time remaining is helpful and was something they didn't have on my last car's ipod connector
-The delay between when you play the next and previous songs (using the steering wheel or not) is much longer (I think it's around 3-4 seconds) than on my last car's ipod connector, which performed the same function at about the same speed as the ipod. The PAL manual actually has a warning about not scrolling too fast or some such thing because it can't keep up.
-Switching between Ipod and XM is terrible if you use XM a lot. Basically every odd time you select XM it plays in iPod mode, while every even time it plays in XM mode. To explain, let's say you just wanted to listen to XM, here's what you do:

1. Radio starts in AM mode. Press "Mode" to switch to FM.
2. Press "Mode" again to switch to XM in IPod mode. The display looks like it is in XM mode though just that it says "iPod Selected" at the top.
3. Press "Mode" again to switch to "AM".
4. Press "Mode" again to switch to "FM".
5. Press "Mode" again to switch to XM mode "For real".

As it happens I don't like XM so I intend to just leave it in iPod mode. Every so often it switches back to AM or FM on me though when I start the car - I haven't figured out what the situations that cause that are yet.

Is yours a video iPod? That appears to be an issue with a video iPod (from one of the other PAL threads):
Quote:
XM not available on start-up: Customers with video iPods may occasionally experience the radio starting up in AM or FM band when the radio had been in iPod mode prior to shutting off the vehicle. They may or may not see "XM not available" appear briefly on the display before the transition to AM or FM. To avoid this situation, the iPod should be connected only AFTER the ignition is started.

I noticed that I saved the pictures as bmp files. Would making them into jpeg then to "pdf"make it smaller?

No, it's an old iPod - I think 3rd gen, with a black and white screen. But actually I think the problem might be that I hit the radio's "off" switch instead of letting the car turn it off automatically after turning off the ignition and opening the door. I'll try to reproduce it again to make sure.

Another thing I haven't been able to get it to do is continue playing from the last track I was playing before I hooked it up to the car - it seems to always start fresh from the first track of the playlist. I think it might be that the PAL's menu is overriding the iPod menu.

It seems to work fairly well though once you get the playlist you wanted selected and just leave it there. It isn't something you should be messing with while driving in any case.
