Check out this article from AP News (via Iwon). A new digital processing chip makes improvement in car audio, even with cheapo speakers.

But what if you use it without the factory audio equipment and have aftermarket audio gear installed, will it still work right? Not only that but is the head unit good for anything else, features?

The article said the code has to be written for each car so I would assume that any change in audio gear would require a recoding. Don't know for sure. There is definitely a downside to it but I've known audio junkies that would go to all kinds of trouble for "the sound".
