I wanted to have the ambient light come on when the doors opened, when the headlights came on, and turn off when the map lights on the rear-view mirror auto-dimmed. As a result, I used the dark brown wire (no stripe). I believe this goes to one of the rear brake lights or the license plate light -- I can't recall which one, sorry.
I'm a little confused, does this dark brown wire turn off with the auto-dimming like you wanted, or does it go on with the brakes/license light? Looks great by the way!

Sorry, I wasn't clear earlier. My original goal was to have the LEDs come on when the parking and and headlights turned on. For whatever reason, the lights come on when I open the door, stay on when the headlights are on, and auto-dim at the same time as the map light after I close the door. It wasn't entirely my intent and I'm not 100% sure why, but I am fairly happy with the result.
I'm glad that you asked the question though... If my memory serves me correctly, there is one ground and two positive wires going to each brake light. One positive wire (the dark brown one) turns the brake light on part of the way when you turn on the parking or headlights. There is another positive wire (yellow, I think?) that controls the brighter lights when you actually press the brake pedal. I think the license plate positive lead is actually green.
Hope that makes sense... If it wasn't so late, I'd go take them apart to double-check. Maybe tomorrow

It would be easy to put some lights in the footwells. Cut the retangular pattern into the door panel and wire into the dome light. Celicas have red lights in their door panels that just snap in. Easy mod. I'm sure there are cool lights at salvage yards. Hot rod shops aslo carry cool shapes

dome light would be tougher..since we dont have one......
would have to go into the connector for the map lights on the mirror or into the same wire he found in the parking brake console......Im already looking into putting ours into the footwell....and two more on either side of the console.......using the snap in brackets and diffusers to give it a finished look.....

I'm looking for a wire to connect to the map light circuit that will allow me to install lights in the foot well (LEDs) and by the seat belts that will dim with the map lights. I find the interior is just too dark at night. Does anyone have any idea how I can make it work?

I should have my manual in a few days to look at the schematic. iIhave quite a bit of wires running to my mirrors due to onstar, but one of them is the hot wire you want, and then you want to ground the other wire. Should be really simple.

so you dont want yours to stay on then when the headlights are on..simply come on with the maplights..and then dim with them correct?
trying to decide which way to go here....leave them on..or let them dim

I would think the well lights should dim with the other interior lights as long as they're not too bright.
I'd like to find a hot wire that I could use for the glove box with a contact switch. That way when you open the box the light comes on. Madmods-when you get your schematic please let me know if there's one I could use.
Do an advanced search someone, 9-12 months ago put in a new mirrow with with a bunch of functions, and he identified the wireing going to our mirrow.

You guys want everything. First off they're so small you can't lose anything in them anyway so what's to look for with a light, and shoot, I thought it was progress when they started putting doors on 'em. They were just holes in the dash when all this sports car stuff started out. Jeeez! Before that they were glove compartments anyway, but that all changed when we got windscreens and bonnets and spanners and the like, ha ha.
I guess some of us bought there Sol's hoping for a what it might be. I bought mine hoping for better than what was. And I'm very pleased.
