I've had so many requests lately concerning my hood exhaust vents, so I decided to start a thread on the subject. First the photo:

I was in Reno, NV and stopped at what I thought was a Lotus dealer, turned out to be a resaler of exotics, including Porsche. So I went to the parts department to see if they had any Lotus louvres. Nope, none, but the guy had a pair of vents in his garage. He doesn't remember where he got them, but molded into the vents was an indication that they came from GM Canada. He brought them in the next day and I HAD to have them. My mechanic painted them black.

They're functional, my mechanic cut slits in my hood at just the right places. Soon I'm going to have the hood openings cut out completely so there's a rectangular hole on each side covered by the vent. I selected the locations carefully, positioning them above the biggest spaces under the hood to maximize air flow.

I'm an accountant, not a mechanic, so this is just personal opinion, but I think I've achieved two advantages: 1) cooler engine; 2) less lift at high speed.

With a solid hood, air pressure builds up behind the radiator, the only exit is to the bottom of the car. With negative pressure, more air flows through the radiator, thus a cooler engine.

As mentioned above, the only exit for the air under the hood is to the bottom of the car. This creates lift. By allowing a significant amount of air to exit the top of the hood, I figure there must be less lift. But I have no means of testing my theory.

those are very nice! the best part is that they are functional - I couldn't believe it when I was told that many of they are just for looks!

They have the same vents on the Red Bull Solstice, they were a GM part and are no longer made according to RMR. There may be others that are similar, or you might get lucky and find some like Giz did.

If they are not identical to the hood vents on the 96 Grand Prix GTP that I have they are soo close as to not see the difference. Difficult to find but not impossible.

Great tip, so I did some google research and came up with this web site which has great install tips. Hood Vents :: Oman4x4.com Don't use their to parts dot com. I think this page is faily old since their parts are half of what parts dot com listed. I found them cheaper at the link below. I'll be ordering mine and I'll document the install and post when I'm done.

The below part numbers were entered into gmpartsdirect.com: Alternate GM Catalog Enter Part Number and select Pontiac, then search.

#10225885 - Left Side Louver - $40.99
#10230097 - Left Side Drip Pan - $8.06

#10225886 - Right Side Louver - $40.99
#10230098 - Right Side Drip Pan - $8.06

Here is a photo of them painted black

I received an informative PM from a knowledgeable person:

1) Hood venting typically reduces front lift by reducing the pressure differential from the hood inner to the hood outer.
2) The hood vents may increase radiator airflow a small amount by decreasing pressure downstream of the radiator.
3) Increased radiator airflow results in increased front lift. More air through the front end openings and radiator generates more front lift.

With all that said, I think the openings in the hood are too small to have a significant aerodynamic and radiator cooling flow impact. They would have an impact on reducing underhood temperatures, somewhat, especially at idle.

But bottom line, the vents DO make MariSOL look tough.

Vents

First a thank you to Gizmo for starting this link. Hopefully something good will be found with all of us trying.
A few months ago I ordered a pair of vents and upon receiving them was surprised to find that they do not have any openings for air exit and are strictly non funtional. Brlieve this will be true of all ABS ones as well as some fiberglass ones if found.
I am surprised one of our venders has not produced any funtional hood scoops/vents. We all know this is a large Solstice Forum market immediately available.

Check with Bodyshops and Junkyards and also try talking to the parts department at your local dealerships. Sometimes they have parts on the shelves that they want to get rid of that are not showing up for distribution.
