Following Gizmo's thread on hood vents, I bought some vents. Painted them the same time I painted ChuckDoc's
ChuckDoc's Painting Project
ChuckDoc, Go-N Def, Dark Tech, Deedle and I examined several spots on the hood looking for the spot I wanted. I really didn't want to make them functional but the vents stick down lower than the edge. If you place them on a flat surface, the sides are up almost a 1/4 inch. I had 4 vents, 2 new one and 2 old (from Ebay). We spent a good 4 hours experimenting on different things.

I like position 3 the best since I didn't want to place them in the center of the hood, making them functional would require cutting a brace. On the side is directly above the hood latches.
We had several ideas on how to mount, and wanted to sand them down but my belt sander crapped out a few years ago, so off to Ace Hardware and bought some black silicone and a belt sander. ChuckDoc and I ground down the bottom of the sacrificial vent until the edge gap off the metal was about a little more than a 1/16th and applied silicone to the underside surfaces and then around the edge of the vent. Even wet, lifting on the vent wouldn't separate it from the panel. We new this would be strong enough for the 100+ mph drag strip. We
But Dark Tech pointed out that the fender is curved and bending the vent put stress on it that it would lift during the drying of the silicone and I didn't want to loose them. The bottom of the vent has 6 stems sticking out that the drip pans screw onto. I didn't use the drip pans in this application. I removed the drivers side fender and removed the Pontiac emblem and laid out the holes
Used plastic spacers to take up the difference of the drip pan not being there and screwed it down but the curve of the fender made for too much irregular gaps around the vent edge. I made the decision to cut the center out of the fender to allow the vent to sit flat.
Go-N Def used his famous polishing technique to clean up the panel
Vent installed on panel, note the plastic spacers in 6 locations.
Fitting the panel back on
More pics to come as I need to do the passenger side today.
