I replaced the original antenna with a shorty ( 6 inch ) and when the top is down there is no reception. I like the looks of the shorter antenna but would like to be able to listen to the radio, as well. Anyone else experiencing this problem or have a fix for the problem.

Thanks,
BGW

I have the J Stubby and it has pretty good reception, but I only listen to the radio a little (mainly AM -Sports/Talk). My town is about 200,000 in population, so maybe I have a stronger reception?

Thanks for the reply. I live in Indianapolis area and all local radio stations. The XM is great and I have no problems when the top is up. Not sure what to do.

A short antenna has significantly weaker reception than one that is full length. The only practical solution to poor reception is to go to a longer antenna.

I cut the original antenna in half and capped it with a rubber boot. I still have good reception.

This is my stubby: J-Series

It lowers to 4" and raises to 11" ... has pretty good reception and looks much better than the OEM one IMHO. I lived in Hinesville, GA (Fort Stewart) for some time and that city is tiny! I was ~40 miles from Savannah and still got good reception.

If you are not getting good reception in a city the size of Indianapolis, then the antennae must be bad. Is it an O-Series? If so, that was my 1st Stubby antennae and it was WEAK!

Have you looked at the Opal GT antenna? not quite as short as 6 inches but has the same reception (if not better) than the flagpole that comes with the car only cost 11.19 plus shipping through GMparts direct

This Opel antenna is what I run. Sleek style...crystal clear Indianapolis reception! I paid $20.12 through local dealership. A little cheaper than GMparts direct with added shipping.

I had poor reception with the stubby, but the J series referred to above is almost as good as the stock one.

Does the J-Series antenna make a whistle noise. I've tried several different antennas and they all howl in the wind. That is why I went back and chopped the stock one in half. The twists on the stock cut out the wind noise.

I also did what Deepbluegxp did, cut my OEM antenna to a height of 10 inches and I have no problems with reception. Also, I'm not sure if we are missing the point that she is making. She says that she only has problems when the top is down. Why would there be a difference in reception between top up and top down? Here is a photo of my shortened OEM antenna.....

Top up or down, my reception is the same. There shouldn't be a correlation.

What did you do to top your antenna after you cut it?

You should've gotten the XM radio. I don't even listen to regular radio anymore and haven't for years in any of my vehicles, since they all have XM radio. I won't even buy a vehicle without XM radio, its the only way to go. I gave up listening to the same 20 songs played over and over all day long, long ago. I can't even tell you the radio call sign's or what channel their on anymore.

I too went with a stubby antenna, more for looks than anything else, which by the way looks great on my GXP. Get off the "wave and join the satelite club"
