   Advice: BSR vs./+ HP Tuners

Hey Everyone,

So I am dying to modify my car and have gotten to the point where I am ready to do it. So here is where I stand:

I currently have done the Dejon BPV Spring, the EDAL Mod, the WG Rod Mod, and a K&N Drop in Filter.

So here is my question:
If I was to remove the Rod Mod and the EDAL mod and load up the BSR Tune. Would I see a better performance than just getting HP Tuners and running the Dejon Tune?

Also if I do install the BSR Tune will HP Tuners still work? I am planning on starting with one of those two base tunes and then doing some more bolt on mods from there and continuing with my own tune.

The one thing that makes me want the BSR Tune is the launch controller. And I will only buy the BSR tune if I know HP Tuners will work in addition.

Thanks for any help you can offer,

I think the BSR tune ultimately locks out hptuners from reading the file properly, its probably best to go with the dejon/westers tune & hpt especially if you plan to do any tuning on your own down the road. Also keep in mind you get one of the best scanners on the market with hptuners making it an even better value, all for about the same price as the BSR flasher.

Besides IT's gotta be possible at some point to port the launch setion of code from the HHRss's. A 2 step would be awesome for bigger turbo's.

I have to agree with Bill on this one, now that the HPTuner has released a version with more support for the ECU!

By the way welcome to the forum Bill

Just placed my order for HP Tuners. All I needed was word from your mouth that BSR locks out HP Tuners and that made me no longer want it. I was all set to buy it when I had my cavalier supercharged but the GMPP Flash locked HP Tuners out then too. I'm not dealing with the same results. Thanks for the comments

which one are you getting? the one with the datalogger? i'm debating which one i would want.

Also do you pay the same amount for the Westers/Dejon tune if you use HPTuners?

I would just wait for Lyndon to finish his 2008 tune. He just ordered one, so its only a matter of time now. It's half the price of the BSR, and (at least the 2007) faster.

The Westers tune is $495 (I think.. going on memory here) if you are a NASSOA member. You will have to send him your ECU though. He Lives in Alberta and is a nice guy to deal with.

There are a few people here and there that are authorized to distribute the westers tune, there may be one closer to you.

The Westers 2007 race tune is awesome, and is as far as I can tell, the best right now.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but you can't load the Westers tune with HPT right?

Actually you can, and if you know a tuner, the new HPT load will allow that tuner to tune your car to a level that will exceed the BSR results. If said tuner has a dyno and your car, you should be able to get a specific tune for your car that exceeds any tune done somewhat blind.

Indeed, nothing beats the quality of a good tuner + dyno + YOUR exact car. They all like it a little different, even with the same parts.

I am getting the standard edition. I don't have any external sensors that require monitoring, and my laptop is small enough that I don't feel like I need the MPVI. My only fuel injected tuning experience is with MegaSquirt on Cavaliers and Sunfires. I hear that HPT is an amazing software for tuning and I have seen it a few times. I can't wait to get my hands on it as I have a few software projects that I would like to develop in conjunction with it.

I'm going to start with comparing my stock tune against the Dejon tune which I'm sure will be a great start. Then I'm going to begin my "stock setup" tune and I will share it if I have great results. After I get that done I'm looking at next winter installing an intercooler, intake, cat, exhaust. Which I'm sure you will all see posts from me then on which people are having the best experience with.

The most important thing of modifying a car is not wasting your money on the most expensive part to gain that extra one horsepower. It's playing the game smart, waiting back for things to fall into place, and going with the best gain for the dollar.
