Most car parts stores have a code reader you can borrow. As to why- it could be any number of reasons- the first time the light came on for me, it was because the attendant at the gas station didn't close the gas cap right. Once you get the code, do a search on here- you'll usually find something.

Could be ANYTHING !! If you have Onstar, they can "sweep" the ECM and give you some idea what is wrong. Also, many chain parts stores will allow you to use their scan tool (in the parking lot) to determine what code is present. HUGE majority of codes these days are about a loose fuel cap. Really -- check yours. BTW, what mods/changes have you made lately?
If the CEL is on steady then its a fault but not a "fix it immediately" fault. As others have said, it could be any of many things. I got a code on the wife's Sky when I did not get the gas cap seated properly. Since the fuel tank needs to be sealed to atmosphere to work correctly, if the cap is not fully seated you get a CEL. But once you reset the cap, the CEL will go away after a couple of key cycles.
If the CEL is flashing or you go into limp mode or some other strangeness in operation then you need to get it checked ASAP

Car runs fine, car sat for winter. I fired it up last weekend, drove it with no issues. was driving it home thursday night and I got the orange check engine light. check the code with my dashhawk.
i should be able to clear the code with my dashhawk correct?
I took the gas cap off and put it back on.
just not sure what to do first. car seems to run fine

Sorry to highjack your thread.
I had the Check engine light come on on my 2008 Base Automatic.
I have installed a SOLO high flow cat and Magna Flow dual exhaust.
I called it in on ONSTAR and the lady told me it was an exhaust warning.
She told me to take it on the highway for an hour and see if that would clear the check engine light.
She also told me that if the car lost some power to take it in for a check up ASAP.
Well, i took it out for an hour and the light is still on and no loss of power.
Does anyone have any idea?Thanks

you have an N/A version with a SOLO exhaust and a factory-installed
and calibrated ECM
either get a new ECM and have it re-flashed or ignore the light
I had Solo check out my system and it is working fine
it's just not working to the pre-assigned GM levels built into your ECM
Thanks for the info Druid-2
So basically ignore it until i get my supercharger and then DDM will set up the ECM right?
