I know that I've asked this question to no avail.... I have a warranty for another 2 years and another 40k+....and I'm thinking about tuning my car. Can I swap out ECMs? Maybe just do the GMPP tune? If I tune my car and something breaks, I was told that they would have to run my tune numbers to get parts for the powertrain.

Get the GMPP tune and you keep your warranty with added power.
If you go with an after market tune and have major engine damage GM will pull your ECM and ship it back to support engineering as part of their diagnostic/quality control process. If they find a software load other than the authorized GM code they can deny warranty service.
Swapping out tunes and ECMs is risky.
And with the GMPP tune you get excellent performance at zeronrisk

OK
I think I understand.
You have some other alternatives.
You can use the vin number and contact the tuners to verify which tune it has, then ask them to return it to the factory tune for you.
Or you could contact Dave at DDM works or Dave at Werks and they will probably install the factory tune appropriate for your car for little or no charge. They have the data and the tools to do so.
In my experience, all good tuners maintain a copy of the initial tune so they can return to that baseline easily.
I am on rev 9 to the tune to my car. I maintain a viable backup copy of each version so I can roll back to any version at will.
If you find the tuner he should be able to take you back to stock.

I do not understand why your buddy at the dealership said they have to run the current tune.
If you get the GMPP tune all the dealer does is flash it over what ever is there period.
They also put the new sensors etc..

you said you bought the car from a GM dealership. Are you sure they do not know that it has an aftermarket tune on it?

Does't make sense to me ,if they sold you that car and they are willing to give you the remainder of the warranty or sell you an extended warranty. They should have to either stand behind the warranty or sell you the car with an original tune to be able to maintain the warranty they sold you.JMO
