HPTuners

Hello All HP Tuner users....

Im interested in purchasing the pro version. I do have a couple of questions.

From what I read, I can download my existing GM Performance Tune from my ecm and save it off.

I also read that reflashing back to the ecm leaves a scar or traces that it has been reflashed. Does HPTuners do it cleanly or does it too leave traces?

I would prefer not to have to get another ecm.

Does changing tire size constitute a reflash?

If I forget to put the the flash back, and the dealer detects it, will they know to put the GM Performance tune? Do the dealers go to the definitive source (whomever they notified when the tune was installed)? In case you have to go to a different dealer?

Im not sure if its worth all the hassle, but looking for real world usage.

Thanks

Kevin

You can download your GMPP tune using HPtuners. But yes reflashing it with any other tune will leave a trace so if GM really wanted to check if you reflashed something then they can see it. There is no way to avoid it. Its basically a ticker that goes up 1 everytime its flashed or reflashed. Only way around it is to have a Stock ECU and then a none stock ECU and switch the stock ECU in when you have to go to the dealer. Tire change doesn't need a reflash. If your having warranty work done and the dealer is messing with your ECU and you don't tell them you have the GMPP tune then might flash the regular tune. But I am not sure if it will throw a code or not since you will have new sensors but the regular tune.

If you purchased the GMPP tune, installed the sensors and had the ECM flashed at a GM dealer, the tune is now a permanent record with that car and GM. If your car is reflashed at the dealer, the GMPP tune will always be there.
A second ECM is the way to go undetected for additional tuning. Most vendors doing aftermarket tunes can flash your new ECM with your GMPP tune prior to adding thier tune. HP will allow you to log info to forward to your tuner to make adjustments to the tune to match your mods and location.

now thats an excellent question ?
if you change tire sizes will the dealership reflash your ecm to recalibrate your ecm/speedometer for the new tires........lol.....

..... theres a good innocent question for the service manager next time you're in
least ways to "evaluate" how "savy" they are and what they read on an ecm....capabilities etc..... hahaha a good conversation starter
let us know if you find out !.....

.... my money is on no can do ! i'd be shocked if they said no problem !

my truck speedometer is off about 4 mph since adding bigger tires least ways according to my gps.........i know i've read / seen applications to fix such issues........ by reflashing ..( i only remember not being interested in the math !.besides i don't have software for the truck).. i don't know if its covered with hp for our application.......tho no doubt thats where i've seen it..........guess its time to put hp on this pc and i coulda checked for you

in any event don't you watch csi everything leaves trace evidence !

hey even if they did put back the oem tune ( not likely )
- if you had hp and had it saved -> reflashing it back shouldn't be an issue ?

You have to ask yourself what are your goals? HPT has limited support for the LNF right now, and we are being jerked around as to when a new release will be... There have been several parameters/tables requested to make BIG power, and some requests for more basic functionality.

If you just want to tune for the stock turbo and bolt ons, HPT can get you there. If your are looking at upgrading the turbo, HPTs ability to tune the fueling @ high (read as higher than stock) is sorely limited.

Some people are claiming that the stock fuel system is actually good for more than 400HP and that other tuning solutions are coming. If I had known about the limitations that HPT would place on us, I might have waited...

You can adjust the speedo for different tire sizes. As far as all the dealer crap - its subjective if its worth the hassle. My opinion is, if you are that worried about the dealer being able to detect reflashes, don't bother with HPT.

Well then

If HP Tuners is not the best tuner for LNF, what one would be considered the most flexible?

I ask these questions, not because I have a plan already, but want these answers to help develop what I want to do and what is worth considering.

If one buys HP Tuners now, does it include upgrades?

Thanks for all the input so far.

More Thinking.....

Please educate me.....

If changing tire diameter is not a re-flash... just a parameter change

What constitutes a reflash? What can be changed without a flash

HP Tuners is basically the only one I can think of that's available to most people that you can purchase to tune your vehicle. Alot of tuners use HPTuners but some don't such as Lydon Wester who owns his own shop and has actual equipment that you can hook up to the car which provides alot better tuning than just using HPTuners. He emails you the tune using hptuners just to make it easier for you than sending the ECU to him but he doesn't actually tune it using it. I personally wouldn't trust a tuner that just uses hptuners where all they do is flip a few variables up words to make your car run lean and get you more hp. Would rather trust someone who has there own shop and uses there own software tuning since they would be a better tuner.

I believe if you pickup hptuners it will include upgrades to when they unlock more stuff for our cars.

Yes HPTuners is the only one that allows you to change the parameters, but relatively few parameters and tables are unlocked. So the key is if/when HP Tuners will give us more.

Like I once said on HPtuners forum, you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning while winning the lottery and riding a unicorn than getting updates from HPT on 4 cyl platforms...
