Wait a minute... So I'm confused.... (sorry guys) What does the KO4 turbo have to do with the turbo on the LNF? It's a twin scroll turbo provided by Borg Warner... But you're saying it's a variant of the KO4 designed turbo???
I'm familar with Audi/VW's just worked on my buddies Jetta GLI 1.8T. I know that has a KO3.
The KO4 Series has many different iterations, depending on intended usage. It is on your LNF in one of these iterations.

The early MkIV 1.8T used a K03 which was followed by the K03s. Simply a K03 with a lager compressor.
The K04 appeared on the Audi TT. The first a K04-10 and then the TT 225 had a K04-20. I believe the the bi-turbo RS6 also used K04's. These were not twin scroll unlike the MkV GTI's K04.
The difference is hardly noticeable when they are set side-by-side.
oh ok yeah that's what I was gathering from what was being discussed. That's interesting to know.... I had no idea that the turbo on the LNF was a iteration of the KO4 turbo at all... But good to know now... thanks for the clarification EcoBoost, and Mr. Stone!

I think that the best turbo for the ecotec is the GT30.
Boost at very low range is not good for internals and transmission, and a bad flow at higher revs is not efficient. The car was made to have a confortable driving with a good response at all gears, very long ratio gears and a lot of torque since 2000rpm, doesn't have an evo or sti feeling, but it's easy to improve that.
The question is that the new 265hp Audi S3 has a very similar turbo and develops about 310-320hp only with ecu tune, arriving even at 340 with mods. I think the stock audi cams and better intercooler flow and head is the answer. Stock ecotec cams are very bad flowing.
GT30 + cams and the Gxp/Redline will be really sports cars, that's I'm going to do.
Thanks!
Indeed, Im with you on the choice of turbo. I dont think you'll really need to change out the bumpsticks, unless your looking for the last 40hp.
Now once they start making bare head castings availible, me & my future wetbench will give you a reason for some staunch cams.
Truth be told, there isnt anything wrong with the stock turbo up to 300whp. unless you need the RPM @ the track. It responds faster than the ETC will let you.
Assuming 20% drivetrain losses, at 300whp = 375engine hp = 562cfm. I don't think this turbo will live long pushed that hard. Has anyone come close yet?

Agree. We have tuned the car to run on 18psi and the efficiency is just not there when pushed over 20psi. Even at 18psi, we were able to get roughly 280whp with support mods.
Ok so it's pretty safe to bet that if you wanted to get your GXP/RL up to 400hp crank and over 300whp you clearly would need a turbo swap?
What would be the best turbo for that?
Mitsu 16g? or GT3076R?
Also would any of the internals need to be changed at those HP levels? What about the trans?
HP is not an easy task. A lot more than just turbo sizing is needed for the power goals you might have. Also, 400whp on which dyno? Different dynos read higher than others. But yes, 300whp = youll need a larger turbo if you want it to be efficient. Your engine builder should be able to show you different turbo maps and help you choose which turbo works best for you.
Ok well my plan, after I get a GXP Coupe (early next summer) is to put a bigger intercooler on, then get a complete exhaust kit down pipe, high flow cat, performance muffler...
I was actually looking at your RPi GT exhaust kit, RPi down pipe & high flow cat or the Solo Mach performance exhaust kit...
Then would be looking into a turbo swap after that... I'd be happy just to get 365hp at the crank and at least over 300hp to the wheels... So I'd probably go with whatever affordable route could get me there (like under 5k total in mods)

Well, with the goals you have outlined, a 125hp direct port nitrous setup should work fine. And that will leave about $4,000 in your bank account.
The Dejon kits will put those numbers down and they seem to be the most affordable but the tuning is still not there yet. Hopefully now that HPtuners is working on us again we might have real tunes soon.
Eloy hows your turbo swap kit coming along? Is Steve's car all sorts of badass now?

Youre not going to get over 300whp with those mods. To make 300whp+, you'll need to upgrade the turbo.

True. You'll just have to keep filling the tank if you want to run around with that power all the time.

Turbo upgrade is going well. BTW, the set up is going on Chris' car and not Steve's. We are using the same software from our R1 tune so we will have no issues tuning the car with the larger turbo.
