Hello, Ok you motor gurus. Im building a hood with twin snorkels on top for air intake and a couple of rows for heat extraction behind them. Now my question is, I would like to have flappers, or plates like throttle plates actuated by either vacuam or electric solinodes so when you rev up the engine the plates open and close. Where on the engine is a vacuam soure. These snorkels would funnel underneath to a CAI box in place of the stock filter location. Would I have to have a vac. canister? etc. What do you think. Thanks Norm norm's fiberglass home page

The easiest vac. source is probably the line going from the intake manifold to the brake booster. On a turbo car that line will see boost too though.
Well that helps, but where can I buy what I need. Solinods rods actuaters etc. I know Im asking what may be simple things to guys like you. Thanks again Norm
Norm, I can email a schematic of what you'd need to do. Give me a PM.
Hello I got your email which has a great diagram which is what I was looking for. Im sure the inlet area where I have put the snorkels are in a very high pressure area as there up front and sticking out, should get lots of cool air. now I have to funnel that underneath into a chamber box where the old stock filter sits and still be able to use the stock inlet hose unless a customer wants to change out to a Dejoin type CAI pipe so as not to throw a code. Thanks norm
Just curious as to why use flaps? In any of my other ram air hoods we have just had mesh grills, or in some cases left them open entirely. Had drain holes in the hood for water to flow to the front of the car, and the air box would catch and drain the rest leaving the filter to get a little moist but then again the filter should be able to handle it.

I can help you out on that norm, possibly machine & fab your opening assembly.
I would use a single port wastegate actuator, setup with a minimal spring. As soon as the motor came under pressure it would open the airdoor. that way when it's shutoff it will stay shut.
Going the other way ala- 70 chevelle w/ls-6 454 would be to use a vacuum motor like the one found on cruise controls to hold the door shut (agains a return spring) and open up as vacuum went away. That would work for both turbo & NA cars.
Norm, Dont forget that as you approach the windshield you typically see higher pressure, I have seen applications that venting the hood actually hurt the cooling flow through the engine compartment.

Hey Norm. I have a Keystone fiberglass hood on my PT Cruiser with a scoop that feeds into the airbox. It's actually a nifty design, and I could snap some close-ups for you if you like...
(I'd be very interested in a scoop/vented hood for the Sol Coupe I'm going to get. I like the RK hood, but I think it's a little too agressive for the look I'll be goiing for...)
