Well I don't have pics to post, but decided that since I've been driving like a grandma for the first 1,000 miles, it was time to let the little girl breathe a little and start pushing the revs up.

Thanks to all the folks out there who posted pics, etc. on working up a "stock modification" for a DIY CAI.

First - Pulled out the front resonator, cut off the whole darn thing from the filter box forward and chopped out about a 10" x 3" rectangle on the front of the filter box (leaving about 3/4" along the top for the front clamp.

Second - Removed the side resonator and plugged the hole with 2" off of a rubber mallet (only slightly used, Make sure to clean it up first!). (This was the best piece of advice yet!) The mallet end fit perfect, was slightly cone shaped to help seal the hole and I was able to clamp down the hose clamp fairly tight because of the strength of the solid mallet piece so I know it's sealed.

Third will be a K&N filter (already ordered) to fit the stock box ($38.95) (Hopefully by weeks end!)

Total price of the DIY CAI - $38.95 for the filter + 1/2 of a slightly used rubber mallet I had sitting in the garage (which is still useable on the opposite end)

I reset the ECM (at least I think I did ) Not being totally mechanically inclined (and running out of time) I just pulled the fuse's for the ECM (#42 &#43) and let it sit for about an hour. Not sure if that did it or not, but . . . .

Combination of doing all 3 things has really changed the personality of the Car. There is a definate throaty growl under the hood, much more responsiveness to the pedal, and much quicker off the line, etc.

Still haven't taken her above 4500rpm's (don't plan on doing that till after another 1,000 miles or so and some synthetic oil) but huge difference in the low range, more power, etc. Obviously haven't dyno'd but she "feels" much sweeter!!

And total cost to get this feeling was $0 + 1 slightly used rubber mallet!

I'll update after I install the K&N to see if that makes a difference as well.

Thanks for the info on your DIY project.
What was the diameter of the rubber mallet head that you cut off to plug the resonator hole?
By the way, how long has it been since you ordered the K&N filter? Just wondering if need to allow a couple of weeks to be safe.
Thanks

Sorry - I saw this last night but spaced measuring the Mallet this morning on my way out the door - but it was a standard rubber mallet you can get at any Home Improvement store. (2" dia maybe?) I cut off about 1-3/4" - 2" right next to the handle.

Test fit before cutting - then maybe mark a line 1/4" past the hole opening - you should be able to get about 1-1/2" into the hole.
Also - you have to remove 2 Torx screws that hold the resonator in place.

I ordered my K&N - but haven't received it yet. I should have it early next week. I'll post an update when I get it installed. The email confirmation I received said it should ship within 24hrs and arrive 4-5 days later.

I'm not sure I could have gotten it quicker if I had drove to the store myself .

I placed my order online with Autoanything Monday Morning . . . . .
Filter arrived Wednesday! Found it sitting by my door when I got home from work last night.

Put in the car and I definately think that it was worth the $39 for my DIY-CAI. Works great - I'm getting more power, better sound, and i think my MPG will improve as well.

I filled up and reset the DIC this morning so I'll know more in a couple of days of driving . . . . . .

Hi Godffy-Dad,
Just in case you post another message with the pictures requested, would you mind measuring the diameter of the mallet head. Your description of what was used and how installed was excellent, I just want to make sure to get the right size in case more than small and large head mallets sold. I would measure the resonator opening for myself, if I could, but will not have the Sol for another few weeks.
Thanks again for your help!

I threw som pics of my car and the mods here . . .

http://www.putfile.com/goofy-dad

(Sorry if I linked it wrong?)

And yes it's a little "not to pretty" - but it has convinced me to go with the Gm or Fujita CAI probably next spring - Hmm - maybe Fathers Day? ( )

Just kinda hard to drop $300+ for something that just cost me $40 - but it would look better . . . . . Then again - I don't drive the car so I can look under the hood at every stoplight!

The Rubber mallet was a 1lb rubber mallet - about 2-1/2" dia at the widest - and about 2-1/4" at the end.

Hope the pics help . . . . .

Appreciate once again the thorough description and pictures of what you did to the resonators. I do have one question about the cutting off the front resonator to leave the air box wide open in the front. Is there a chance that moisture could enter the front of the box when driving in the rain or washing the car with a jet spray from the front without the "blocking mechanism" created by the front resonator box?

I don't believe so - The GM or Fujita (sp?) CAI fully expose the filter in this same area. By doing the DIY Stock method, the filter is actually protected more as the filter lays horizontally above the cutout inside the filter box.

Also - I would think that since the K&N Filter is an oiled filter that it would be just fine from any microspray or vapor that makes it up to the filter anyway.

I see you have the Fujita intake now. What made you swap from your DIYCAI?
