So some of you may know that the box on the side of the intake is pretty useless unless you want to keep things quiet under the hood.
I personaly like hearing the intake suck in air.
So I removed the resonator chamber and capped it.
Turns out a cap from a spray can fits over the hole perfectly. I then used the stock clamp to tighten it back down.
Sorry for the poor quality. My camera dosnt take good night shots at all.
Anyway. I did it just to help clean up under the hood untill I order a new intake. I hate things being cluttered up. I can actualy see the side of the engine now
The motor is a little louder now when I get on the gas hard.
Any worries about that getting sucked in, or cracking once it goes through a few heat cycles? If it were me, I would look for something a little more sturdy, or just wait until I could get ahold of the aftermarket CAI.
Just my $.02, though. It's your car.

Yeah, I completely agree.....
A plastic spray can cap is not that rigid. You can probably pull it out easily with your hand even with it tightened down.
If I were you, I would get a large PVC end-cap fitting. (what you would use to cap off the end of a large PVC pipe).
That's hard plastic, and you can fit that in the hole. When you tighten it down with the hose clamp, it should be strong enough to create a decent seal.

Why are you capping off the intake? How will it suck in air?
On the intake tube, there is a large "air box". All that it does is baffle the air intake to reduce air intake noises. There are noise standards now in most cars and they cannot produce a vehicle that's loud.
What he wants to do is eliminate that huge air silencer and cap it off. The air inlet box is STILL on the car (in front).
Although I DID personally purchase the cold-air-intake setup, I would really like to see someone make a slightly more efficient air intake tube that looks stock, allows you to use the factory air box, and that eliminates the air silencer box.

I see the point of the hard plastic. I'll be sure to inspect it before I drive again.
ANd it wont get sucked in. It fits pretty snug over the outside the tube.
I may just end up putting the box back on. I'll be ordering the intake in a couple weeks anyway.
I was just mainly curious to see what effect the box had on the stock intake.

THat would be nice. I would also cut off all the crap before filter on the stock air box. Basicly just use the housing that holds the stock filter.

Thanks for the thread ESB that's exactly what this forum is all about. Letting everyone know whats going on and being tried out there. What your doing is called Yankee ingenuity, It's what has been credited with winning the Second World War.
Keep on Hot-Rodding and keep us posted.

I noticed in the picture that it looks like the outside of the cap is on the oustside of the intake tube. I wonder what it would do if you switched it around so that the flat part is on the inside of the intake tube (in an attempt to be flush with the inside of the intake tube).
Did you notice any difference in sound and / or power?
Just curious...

I dont honestly think that making the peice flush would help at all on a restrictive stock peice like that.
More noise - YES Not really noticed with hood up reving it. But I did notice when on the road getting on it.
More power - Doubt it.
On my old Cavalier stock intake mods like this didnt do anything for power. JUst made more noise. Someone did dyno runs that showed no change.
But I do think that removal of the stuff in front of the filter may help. But maybe only a fiew horses. That will be my next project I guess.
What kind of noise did you hear? On my 1987 Fiero SE / V6, I punched out the water separator. It's also supposed to be used as a sound baffle, but not many people actually realize that. The air intake is on the drivers side, and with the passenger side down, it sounds like I've got a well used supercharger or something. It's kind of a cool sound. It basically sounds like a series of metal pulleys at high speed.
I'm wondering if the baffle is meant to reduce / eliminate sounds coming from the throttle body, or if it's meant for reducing sound resonance from the motor itself?

I've done basically the same thing. I fabricated a plug to fit the hole, it is much cleaner looking and much stronger. I also modified the airbox, I've drilled a series of 1/2" holes on the bottom of the airbox, before the front of the radiator. I plan to use a K&N filter when I can get one.
Pontiac Pete, there seems to be some more interest in modifying the stock airbox among other ownsers now - me for one. Latin Venom can also chime in here too as, in another thread, it sounds like you may have removed the baffle from the stock intake too
So, what I would like to know is:
Please can you post pics of the airbox with the additional holes
Have you yet found a K&N replacement filter, if so part number?
Has anyone come up with a better looking / more permanent blanking plate for the resonator other than a spray can lid
