The chamber is called a resonator. A Helmholtz resonator, to be technically correct.

http://people.deas.harvard.edu/~jone...helmholtz.html

It is a specific volume to address the attenuating of specific frequencies in the intake - so removing it shouldn't do anything other than maybe make your intake noise louder in certain frequencies (like the CAI installs). Some people may be able to detect the changes, some people will be audio-insensitive and not detect a difference at all.

No pics to post but I was looking at the resonator box scratching my head as to how I could remove... Promptly retrieved my cheap rubber (black) mallet from the garage, Put one of the ends into the hole to see how it would fit. Fit very tight, so I cut off a good 2" portion off the end, the "hammering" side was slightly tappered so I pushed it into the hole in the tube. Tightened up the hose clamp for insuraqnce. Waa-la... Can't speak to what if anything it did in regards to performance, it certainly cleaned up the engine bay some...

All you need now is to add a filter with a much better unrestricted flow, and you pretty much have the same as buying an aftermarket CAI.
I wish someone that has done this would put it on a Dyno and you would all see that the numbers would be pretty close to the one for the aftermarket CAI, less prettier of course.

I'd love to see dynos!

LV, the higher flow filter, is this one that would fit in the stock box? Or are you speaking of going with a cone filter? I'd like to figure out the filter first, then all I'd need is to cap the resonator - and I'd be done (correct me if I'm wrong)

thanks as always!

Yes the one that would fit in the stock box, like a K&N or something similar, the more unrestricted the better or and this is not for you but you could make your own, for those times you want as much unrestrict air as possible.

I looked in the new (2006) K&N catalog today and there was no filter listed for the solstice. We'll probably have to see if another models will fit.

Try contacting K&N directly to see if it is available but did not make it into the catalog.

so, K&N would look the same, just be freer flowing?

If anyone finds the K&N, post it, and I'll make a sticky out of that post - PM me if you find it!

Do we know if the filter for the Cobalt or Cadilac CTS is the same as our's. How about it WINDFACE could you look it up for us.
If it is the same as the Cobalt then look and see if K&N or some other manufacturer has a performance filter for it.

Ahhhhhh .......

What is the filter number that GM provides with their CAI ?
Same as the stock number ?

If not, could we assume a freer flowing filter ?

Sounds cool. but what is the inner flat plate you speak of, the rubber seal?

It is not as simple as looking for the GM CAI part number. The GM CAI replaces the entire assembly up to the intake manifold and uses a cone type filter. What is being described here is keeping the stock airbox (maybe adding some additional holes for added airflow) then replacing the stock flat GM supplied paper filter with a free-er flowing type (such as K&N) and then removing the resonator assembly and plugging the resonator hole.

LV (for one) speculates that this should be almost as good as buying an aftermarket CAI intake but for considerably less - filter approx $40 (guessing) Vs. over $300 for a replacement - and should show some BHP gains on the dyno.

Ball Mason jar lids have an outer ring with an open center, like a doughnut and a thin flat plate to fill the center void. The flat plate has a rubber gasket around the perimiter on one of the disc's face to ensure an air tight seal. This maintains the vacuum utilized for the lid and jar's original purpose, making jelly. Have checked and has remained in position. Without going the CAI route yet, is it intellegent, benificial to increase air flow by drilling holes in filter box, as I have read in another thread. And if so would the best location be in the front wall to utilize air flow through the grill. Sterno

It is not speculation just like the Solstice has a CatBack design, it also has a CAI, the problem in the case of the exhaust is the muffler, GM wanted tune to a particular sound, but the designed restricts the exhaust flow, same with the CAI, GM put a resonator box to keep the noise down, plus a more restrictive filter, change those 2 parts and you get a lot more air going in.
You do not have to believe me, just put it on a Dyno and you will see the same type of results you get from the other CAI's.
Remember this mod whether you buy the aftermarket or you do this will only give you at most 1 maybe 2 WHP, what it really does, it makes the motor work better because of the increase in air flow.
