I was looking under MARiSOL's hood checking out the air intake. It's OEM right now, getting ready to have the KappaSphere CAI installed soon.

So, with the CAI, I understand that the side box will be removed. Is that called a resonator or what, and what is its purpose? The OEM begins with one or two boxes up front, right? Do both of those get removed too? What is the purpose of those two boxes?

Then I was looking at the space behind the fan, wouldn't that be a better place to locate the filter end of the CAI? But I noticed the engine belts there, so maybe we don't want anything that might get caught up with them, is that right?

Then I look on the driver's side of the radiator, some nice space there, except that's where the horn is, right? Well, maybe the horn could be relocated. Also need to cut out that plastic down at the bottom. Then the wind deflector underneath the nose of the car would deflect a lot of air up into that empty space where the air filter would be. The tubing would need to be flexible enough to pull it up when it's time to change the filter, but there could be straps or something to hold it in place the rest of the time.

Now for all you mechanically-inclined persons out there, please teach this accountant a lesson. Why isn't my idea a good one?

When the front suitcase that contains the airfilter comes out you'll see it's a perfect place for fresh air to get to the canister. It's hard to visualize with all that samsonite in there... see how open the space becomes?

Remember, it's called a CAI for Cold Air Induction (or Inlet). Anything located behind the radiator and fan is Hot.

This would work (sort of). Problem is that the air that is going through the hole you've cut in the plastic was supposed to go through the radiator. Now it's, for the most part, going past the air filter. It would slightly increase the air pressure at the inlet filter but without a box around the filter, not by much. But it might also increase the temperature of the engine, which is a real horse power no no.

Ahh that makes sense! Now what about ram air? Is there something else involved? Or is it the same?

Really the CAI is the least bang for the buck you can do! I'd invest in the retune first!

Well, actually, the space I'm talking about, where the horn is, is blocked off from the radiator section, so it should not affect the air to the radiator. The airdam is quite wide and deflects air into three sections, the one I'm talking about, the center section for the radiator, and another section on the passenger side.

But tweety pointed out in a PM, as did denette above, that when all the Samsonite Luggage is removed, there is a lot of room there with fresher air. tweety suggests cutting a hole through to the space in front of the radiator, which would provide a tremendous amount of the coolest air possible, hopefully without disrupting airflow to the radiator, just getting the excess air.

Any thoughts on that? tweety also suggests building a box around the filter to prevent hot air from under the hood from infiltrating.

And yes, MyNewSolstice, the ECM retune is better bang for the buck, but I have to wait for my long tube headers, then get Vector's custom tune, since the canned tune doesn't work for long tubes.

If you are going to be cutting a hole in that plastic area you need to think about sealing it off.
There needs to be a cover or shroud around the back side of the filter to keep all the air coming into the radiator area in the radiator area.
The radiator breaths from the bottom scoop which pushes the air up the face of the radiator and it also takes in forced air through the bottom openings in the grill.
Go out and look at the grill and shine a light into it. You will see how the molded plastic is guiding the air in for the radiator.
Now you go add a CAI and cut a hole into the top cover that is forward and at the top of the radiator to stick your filter. Now what? Cover it. Or like the term that is used on other sites, 'seal it off'.
You only want the new filter to pull air from one location-the cold side. In this case the air being used by the filter will be residual air at best.
The point of the CAI is to do what? Answer: to give you a larger cross sectional area of air.
Take the stock air filter out and look at the bottom of the tray. Now look at the filter. How much of the filter are you actually using? Half.

When the turbo gets here it too will have a CAI filter that will require many of us to come up with some form of a sealed box should we cut the top of the cover open. If you seal it right you shouldn't be robbing much of anything away from the radiator to be a concern. When the demand to pull air is there you will be moving creating a flow in that should more than make up for it.

Cut a hole and not seal it is like leaving a window open at home and running the AC.

Disclaimer: I am a mechanical engineer and not a fluid dynamic engineer. Think about where the air is going and what its job is before cutting anything.

newer corvettes have been doing this mod. there are many after-market kits that you cut the radiator shroud and put a box with a cone filter in it to the intake. I am trying to figure out how to do this to my stock intake mod. but here are some photos of the corvette ones to get some of you DIY guys ideas

this one adds about 20hp dyno proven to a vette and says it adds more power after 35mph (ram air) too.

I am going to tinker around to figure out how do make one with the modified stock air box if it is possible....and have fun trying

If someone has already made the 'box' to go around the filter then it will be a simple task to modify it enough to suit our cars.
Take a flanged hood to go over the filter and put 1/4 turn tool-less fasteners on it, (Dzus).
Done.

My idea is to find a cone or round filter that can fit in the inside opening of our intake box, in other words take the flat filter out and replace it with a round one that, it's exterior lip can be push inside the intake opening thus creating a seal, then closing the regular intake box.
If you Dyno this vs any of the CAI's it would probably be very comparable to their results.

hatetowait has got the goods on this CAI solution. Make it just like the Covette system. All the engineering has been done for that car. All that remains for us is to adapt it to the Sol. It looks like, by the time I get to Montana, and my car the parts and the solution will be well in hand.
I added that last part just to give the jokers something to do.

denette and JustMike: that GM CAI takes a VERY sharp turn near the nose of the car. jkicak indicated in another thread that such turns should be avoided whenever possible. Anyone have comments on that? The KappaSphere is pretty straight until the 90 degree turn downward into the engine.
