hey everyone im new to the boards and i joined cause i have a question to ask. The look of the Solstice and the sky have been growing on me and i need a new Daily driver/ project car. I currently own a 93 rx7 that i just installed a single turbo into so im not a noob to cars in any sense. I been kickin aound the idea of buy a 2.4 ecotec model and turbo that with the money i would save instead of getting the GXp or REdLINe since i have heard the ecotec thats very well to F/I and i could make more power in the long run with more CC's. Or should i get the GXP or the redline and build from that. i have thought of the V8 conversion but i that isnt my kinda thing. So what my qustion is which should i buy and why, and does the 2.4 turbo make more power. Also and is there any chassis changes between the two or is it just the motor?

One could really go either way about this if one is going to mod this thing up to infinity. I'll get one question out of the way... yes the chassis are identical. As of now it is easier to get lots of horsepower out of the 2.4 block, since it has been around longer and already has an ecu crack. However I hear story after story about how tough/well designed the 2 liter block is. And if you where to look up info on the Red Bull drift racer you'll find that they started with a GXP and tuned it to hell and were able to achieve 500 horses, to which i believe they did only in order to keep it drivable.

Heres an article with some info on that racer http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z11543/default.aspx

and heres some specs http://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/a...5&d=1146232625

and heated discussions! Red Bull Solstice GXP (550hp) for Drifting Competition

Other than that I really would not know what to recommend, I'm a firm believer in "no replacement for displacement" but if there where ever a block made out of diamond and was only 1 liter, id probably go with that :P

GXP !!! You won't get as good of a ride if you put a turbo in it yourself.

The Red Bull drift Solstice GXP engine has nothing in common with the production GXP enigne. They didn't even start with a GXP. It's a 2.4L port injection engine with a standalone engine management system (HKS?), billet crank shaft, forged rods and pistons, different cams, custom manifolds, etc. That engine has more in common with the 2.4L simply because it's not direct injection.

The GXP chassis is basically the same but has different rate bushings, standard stability control, brake ducts for cooling, and different suspension.

I have a 2.4L Sky that's getting turbo'd, but if I were buying new it would probably be a toss up. It will be easier to make more power with a built 2.4L because parts for port injection engines are readily available. But it will cost more in the long run.

All Ecotec's use the same block if they're from the same generation (Gen I or II). They all start as the same basic casting and machined for the different bores.

That said, the Red Bull Solstice has pressed in cylinder liners anyway and much of the block is far from any stock piece. The original specs when the car was released last fall have changed.

I'm not even sure the 2.0L listed in the second link you posted is a GenII block. I think the first motor in the car was a left over drag motor.

leave it stock so you don't void your warranty.

ah then it makes more sense now, cause i originally thought they said they over-bored, but i could not find any articles regarding that

So sorry for hijacking! anyways, I'd go with a GXP, as you could always go with the idea of "enough power to hold you over until you buy mods" as opposed to "buy cheaper to afford early mods".

I find this statement pretty unfounded. I find the GXP and it's over control of the suspension with stabilitrac that they dumbed down the control over the car. I think the ride of the GXP might be smoother for the average driver, but I find the 2.4 NA car is a little more raw and I like that.

To each his own tho.
