All, I'm currently working on swapping out the ecotec with an LS1. I know that it's already been done several times (mallett, werks, archie, etc.). However, there seems to be some missing information as far as how it's done (i.e. wiring harness, radiator specs, engine mounts, clearances, etc.). You can check out my progress here, http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2637766. I'm really just interested in getting all the details about the swap in one place. So, if anyone has any questions, please feel free, likewise if you have any suggestions/advice, don't hesitate.

Thanks Norm. I'm a fan of your fenders, hoping to get a set once I get around to the body work. What's the lead time on those?

Thanks,
Adam

Looks cool. Man, you are really doing a number on that car.

I see you are in St Johns, MI. I have a Mallett SKY here in Clarkston with the LS2 in it. Love to meet up sometime, especially when that sweet ride is on the road!.

Thanks, we'll definetly have to meet up. Do you think you could take some pictures of the underneath of your car for me? I'm interested in the engine mounts and the oil pan clearances at the back of the engine (between the pan and the crossmember). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Adam

Thanks a ton! I'll be watching closely. Wish I could be there to lend a hand and learn the ins and outs. I plan to do my own FrankenSol when I get back stateside in '09. Hoping for a kit by then, but I'm willing to 'Monster Garage' it if that's what it takes.

Edit: And just in case you don't post about the wiring scematic over at cardomain, can you post it here, please?

Yeah, when I get the spare time to actually draw up the full schematic (definetly before '09), I'll be sure to post it. Also, there is a ton of various information scattered all over that I'm coming across, I'd like to consolidate it if possible. I'll post whatever I feel was necessary for me to do my build and answer any questions as well. I've got a lot more pictures other than those at cardomain, so if there's something anyone would like to see, just let me know.

Thanks for the interest,

-Adam

Adam,

I've never done an engine swap, so I could take up a lot of your time with questions! My first, though, is about the motor mounts:

On your cardomain page, you say that you are using 'vette mounts instead of T/A mounts. Are you talking about the actual pieces that are welded to the K-member / Frame, the mounts themselves, or both?

The mount brackets that the camaros and trans ams use are a two piece unit where one piece welds to the frame and the other piece bolts to the motor with the rubber mount between them. Many newer cars use a mount bracket that bolts to the motor and the rubber mount sits between the bracket and the frame (bolted) so there is nothing welded to the frame. The mount brackets from a c5/c6 corvette will bolt right up to the motor and then you just need the mounts (rubber/hydraulic from c5/c6 corvette). There are some issues with those brackets (height, location of mount hole in relation to motor position), i'm assuming this is why werks makes their own motor mount brackets. I'm still deciding what I want to do for sure. Hope this clears it up, at least as much as I know right now.

Adam,

Did you stop working on the swap? I don't see any new postings in your picture/story site.

I only work on it on the weekends, so I only update once a week. Also, I've been really busy with work lately. Believe me, I'd much rather be working on the car. -Adam

OK, that makes sense. To be honest, I haven't pulled the motor out of anything newer than an '88 Mustang. So the angles for the rubber/hydraulic mounts line up nicely to the Solstice frame?

I'm assuming you at least have to drill new holes in the frame and/or weld new bungs on to thread the bolts to, no? Surely an LSx doesn't line up *that* nicely both fore-aft and width-wise that the motor mount locatoins on the block line right up with the K-member. It CAN'T be that easy!

The width is fine, but you do have to drill new holes. The ls1 mounts are symmetrical whereas the ecotec are not.
