Hey, sorry I missed your thread. As for transplants being worth something, I would just do it because you want to. I did my conversion because I liked the car and wanted more performance. I know I will not keep the car long enough for it to be worth anything, and If I do, it will need a restoration by then. Here is an Ebay auction that just happened for a Mallett and it didn't even reach reserve.
eBay Motors: Pontiac : Solstice (item 130221598161 end time May-22-08 17:00:00 PDT)
I went the Performance Autowerks route. I buoght all my stuff from them and had a local shop do the work for me. Doing it this way, I was able to get it exactly the way I wanted it, however, If I had it to do all over again, I would take the car to Dave and have him do all the work. Dave is a one stop shop, so he could complete the whole project, engine, suspension, trans brakes etc, as would Mallett. I guess I never really considered Mallett. Just looking at their price list, they were much more money than doing it the way I did. I planned this on a budget and could not have swung having Mallett doing it for me and getting the car like I wanted it. For the same price as Mallet charges for their 2.0 conversion $24K, I was able to do all that plus KW suspension, Tremec 6 speed transmission, and an STS V Quaiffe LSD rear diff. If you add these options with them, it makes the 2.0 another $14535. So, IMO, I got a hell of a deal.
In the end, I can say I am very happy with how the project turned out. Your probably right, If I keep my car for 40 years, it will not be worth as much as a Mallett, but I do not think I'll have it that long.
