Drive train play?

Drove the Sol yesterday for the first time in quite a while and noticed that when I was letting the clutch out I could feel something spooling up before the wheels started turning. Not a lot but definitly more than used to be there. She got the recall for the seal but I think the dealer will have to take a good look at that differential. It has a little dry fluid on it but nothing major.

Fluid on the diff and even very slight leaking after the recall work is done is ok, it's in one of the TSB notes I believe. Excess fluid during installation and fluid placed on the seal will leak out after first replaced. As long as you don't keep having new fluid or excessive fluid it'll be ok.

Now the drive train play I'm not sure about.

I experienced a small bit of fluid which found its way to my exhaust, but not to the garage floor, and was assured that was normal, I'll put a few more miles on it today to find out.

Drive train play should NOT be different if the only thing changed was the seal. (If the only thing changed was the amount of time gone by since it was driven, and it seams like there is more drive play, it could just be your memory . . . )

Depends on where the fluid is coming from. If it's the rear it's a good chance it's the overflow valve, if it's the front near the drive train it's a good chance it's the pinion seal. I've got a pile of pics of fluid burnt all over my exhaust from where my diff bust and flung fluid on it. If you've just got a couple drops that's not much at all, I had fluid all over the place under the car.

Been there, done that too. I had driven Milwaukee - Pittsburgh - Milwaukee to do a run with MomsSol and XMM shortly after having the vent replaced, and the replacement vent was defective. The morning after getting back I had leaks in places I didn't know about: Let's see, pinion seal, left axle seal, right axle seal, vent, and the gasket where both sides of the unit get together. The dealer replaced the entire differential the following week. They put in a really good one that has never leaked a drop, vent or otherwise. I am a bit leery after having the pinion recall done, and then smelling burning diff fluid after a 10-mile drive from the dealer, in the rain!

I have errands to run this afternoon, and I'll take the Solstice and then give it a really good once over after I get back.

Rear end

The diff has never been touched on her car. There is just a little dried up fluid on top and I think it was Brentil that said that could just be some overflow. The play in the drive train I am sure about - have driven many different manual transmission vehicles and never felt that type of play before the wheels engage. It reminds me of the big pulling tractors when they tighten the tow chain before the pull. You can definitly feel something turning as the clutch starts to engage and then it stops and the wheels start to move the car.

Some driveline gear lash is to be expected. One way to detect the "play" in the drive train is to drive along at about 35 mph in 3rd gear. Accelerate , then let off of the gas quickly so that you suddenly transition from accelerating to decelerating. You might hear a little clunk as the lash comes out on the driveline. While you are at it, while decelerating in 3rd, punch it a little to transition suddenly from decelarating to accelerating... you should experience the same thing. This is normal gear lash and it is one reason why a car can sometimes clunk.

This is more like a tow chain being pulled tight - I've never felt this much play in any transmission I've ever driven - even this car has never had that much play in it. She has to make a date with the dealer to check the recall - I will ask him to check this out while he has it.

Wife out of town

She had to go to Hartford, Conn. on business for the week so I am dropping The Redhead at the dealer this afternoon to get the recall and other stuff checked out. The left side footrest broke the other day - see if they can replace that and the cupholder one more time. I will point out the drive train play and see what they think.

Cup holder!

So the dealer has her car since Monday and now calls me to say it is done with the recall and they put another cup holder in, I think this is the fourth, and they want $52 for it since it is no longer in warranty - I told them it will just break again so they suggested I leave it in and not use it! I told them to put the old one back in and I promise not to use it and I will be $52 richer. Isn't there some kind of extended warranties on parts that fail every 15,000 miles? If there isn't there should be.

Everything good -

I went down to pick up the car yesterday afternoon and when I got there the service manager said they left the new cup holder in because the extended warranty covered it. Yeah! I drove it home and the play in the drivetrain is gone. They refilled the differential and put the "new" plug in. Yeah! If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!
