Looks like they "want" to start by next Tuesday .... refilling the Lake.

Langhans told village officials that they'd likely begin working on a temporary structure, like a dam, to close off the 300-foot gap and begin refilling the lake as early as Tuesday. "The big concern held by everybody here is, when this drains the lake, will we be able to get the water levels back up and, if so, how fast?" he said. Though officials could not estimate how long the lake will be gone, Assistant Zoning Administrator Jess Eastman said it certainly won't be several years. "I heard some reports that said it wouldn't be back for two years," he said. "Don't they realize that this community's livelihood is the lake?" The Department of Natural Resources would need to approve the structure, which Langhans said would likely need a culvert in case it happens again. Langhans added that Gasser Construction may haul in stone to begin a temporary road as well.

I was reading the Tribune today and they did dredge the lake back in the late 80's. Emptied it, dredged it, then refilled it. I read a report that said it takes about 2 weeks to fill the lake back up.

Their search yielded only a few toy cars, padlocks and few fishing lures. “We swam here as kids,” Platt said. “Never thought we’d be standing here in the muck.” Workers stretched a temporary sewer line across the 200-yard breach where the lake had washed out a highway embankment. Rushing water ripped apart underground sewer lines as it poured through the breach, and this morning raw sewage was still pouring out of the pipes and running downstream. State engineers and water specialists viewed the site from the ground and a helicopter, said Laurel Steffes, a spokeswoman for the Department of Natural Resources. They also planned to meet with local officials to discuss cleanup efforts, she said. It won’t be difficult to refill the lake once permits are obtained, said Allen Steele, a contractor the village hired to run the temporary sewer line. Andy Morton, DNR supervisor of the lower Wisconsin River basin, said Dell Creek, which fed the lake, was rushing through the breach, making it difficult to plug the gaping hole. The first step will be to reroute the creek back onto the lake bed, perhaps by building a berm and reshaping the lake bottom. Village trustee Tom Diehl said work on rerouting the creek would begin immediately. Still, water isn’t expected to be back in the lake before the end of summer, he said. The incident has caused at least $10 million in damages, Diehl said, and no water means local tourism will suffer even more. “No question about it,” he said.

The police, meanwhile, needed to launch their rescue boat as people continued to fish on the lake at 11 a.m. By 2 p.m. the lake was almost entirely empty, and the department's boat is now stuck in the middle of the lake.

Dredging and refill is a lot different than check for potential weak areas that might cause another FLOOD and DRAIN ... refill as needed.

As much as I hope they get it back quickly for their tourism dollars ... I also hope they do it in a safe and engineeringly thought out process so no other homes are lost in a future collapse of another section nearby.

Oh agreed...I was just surprised it only takes 2 weeks to fill it when they decide to do it. Figured it would take much longer based on all the chatter going back and forth from the various new sources.

Sounds like they want to start on it ASAP though.

....restoring the lake will be more involved than simply filling in the new channel. "Whatever goes in there will have to be built to dam standards," he added. By Monday afternoon, the new channel that funneled the lake into the Wisconsin River had become as much an attraction as anything else in the venerable tourist area. Located at the end of Bowman Road, through a nature area on a narrow dead-end street, the area drew a small but steady stream of people.
