This is GOOD news, and while we don't care if we have a lake, I'm sure there are some guests who will cancel thier Dells visits this summer because of no lake.
So let's show "Baker's Sunset We Have A Lot Of Beachfront Property Now Resort" that we will be there in Sept, lake or no lake!
Book 'em now and let's go

Looks like they "want" to start by next Tuesday .... refilling the Lake.
Quote:
Langhans told village officials that they'd likely begin working on a temporary structure, like a dam, to close off the 300-foot gap and begin refilling the lake as early as Tuesday.
"The big concern held by everybody here is, when this drains the lake, will we be able to get the water levels back up and, if so, how fast?" he said.
Though officials could not estimate how long the lake will be gone, Assistant Zoning Administrator Jess Eastman said it certainly won't be several years.
"I heard some reports that said it wouldn't be back for two years," he said. "Don't they realize that this community's livelihood is the lake?"
The Department of Natural Resources would need to approve the structure, which Langhans said would likely need a culvert in case it happens again. Langhans added that Gasser Construction may haul in stone to begin a temporary road as well.

I was reading the Tribune today and they did dredge the lake back in the late 80's. Emptied it, dredged it, then refilled it. I read a report that said it takes about 2 weeks to fill the lake back up.

Dozens of other southern Wisconsin communities continued to battle rising water and shore up seeping dams in the wake of days of rainstorms. More than 100 roads remained closed across the state and 100 people were in shelters, Gov. Jim Doyle said.
Federal Emergency Management Agency teams were expected to start visiting flood areas, including Sauk, Columbia, Milwaukee, Vernon and Crawford counties on Thursday. Doyle said he would seek a federal disaster declaration when their work is finished.
Heavy rains Saturday and Sunday pushed 267-acre Lake Delton over its banks on Monday. The lake washed out a highway and tore a new channel to the Wisconsin River, toppling three homes into the water. It drained itself dry within a few hours.
Life in Lake Delton, a village of 2,000 people about 45 minutes northwest of Madison, revolved around the man-made lake. Resorts, cottages and grand homes surround it.
Today the lake was a muddy sinkhole. Boats sat on the river bed and docks went nowhere.
Nick Delfrate, 31, and his buddy, Dan Platt, 32, both of Lake Delton, combed the lake bottom with a metal detector in search of wedding rings. Their search yielded only a few toy cars, padlocks and few fishing lures.
“We swam here as kids,” Platt said. “Never thought we’d be standing here in the muck.”
Workers stretched a temporary sewer line across the 200-yard breach where the lake had washed out a highway embankment. Rushing water ripped apart underground sewer lines as it poured through the breach, and this morning raw sewage was still pouring out of the pipes and running downstream.
State engineers and water specialists viewed the site from the ground and a helicopter, said Laurel Steffes, a spokeswoman for the Department of Natural Resources. They also planned to meet with local officials to discuss cleanup efforts, she said.
It won’t be difficult to refill the lake once permits are obtained, said Allen Steele, a contractor the village hired to run the temporary sewer line.
Andy Morton, DNR supervisor of the lower Wisconsin River basin, said Dell Creek, which fed the lake, was rushing through the breach, making it difficult to plug the gaping hole. The first step will be to reroute the creek back onto the lake bed, perhaps by building a berm and reshaping the lake bottom.
Village trustee Tom Diehl said work on rerouting the creek would begin immediately. Still, water isn’t expected to be back in the lake before the end of summer, he said.
The incident has caused at least $10 million in damages, Diehl said, and no water means local tourism will suffer even more.
“No question about it,” he said.
Found this, just a few minutes ago.

The police, meanwhile, needed to launch their rescue boat as people continued to fish on the lake at 11 a.m. By 2 p.m. the lake was almost entirely empty, and the department's boat is now stuck in the middle of the lake.
You'd think if yer sitting in yer boat, you'd notice the change in altitude

Dredging and refill is a lot different than check for potential weak areas that might cause another FLOOD and DRAIN ... refill as needed.
As much as I hope they get it back quickly for their tourism dollars ... I also hope they do it in a safe and engineeringly thought out process so no other homes are lost in a future collapse of another section nearby.

Oh agreed...I was just surprised it only takes 2 weeks to fill it when they decide to do it. Figured it would take much longer based on all the chatter going back and forth from the various new sources.
Sounds like they want to start on it ASAP though.

....restoring the lake will be more involved than simply filling in the new channel. "Whatever goes in there will have to be built to dam standards," he added.
By Monday afternoon, the new channel that funneled the lake into the Wisconsin River had become as much an attraction as anything else in the venerable tourist area. Located at the end of Bowman Road, through a nature area on a narrow dead-end street, the area drew a small but steady stream of people.
Glad to hear that you got your room reconfirmed Suzy711Q!

Status of Lake Delton Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings!
Many of you have heard the terrible news about Lake Delton. I would like to give you all an update on what has happened to our beautiful lake.
On June 9, 2008, Lake Delton, a small man-made lake, broke through its banks, draining into the Wisconsin River. Our neighbor communities of Baraboo, LaValle, Mauston, North Freedom, Portage, Reedsburg, and Rio have also experienced high water. Some area businesses were affected and the Wisconsin Dells Visitor & Convention Bureau has been working diligently with its member businesses and community leaders to assess the affects and provide support.
Baker's Sunset Bay did NOT incur any damage. We are open for business! Our pools are all open, the bonfire is going each evening and our beach is HUGE! The view is really not that bad. It's very different but not terrible. We encourage you to keep your reservations. If you keep your room reservations, we can offer you a 15% discount for this summer.
In addition this discount, many of our area attractions are offering a 50% discount to visitors that support the lake resorts and hotels. These attractions incude the Wisconsin Ducks, The Boat Trips, Tommy Bartletts, Noahs Ark, Kalahari, Ripleys, Wizard Quest, etc., with more being added by the hour. You will be given a voucher that will give you this great discount when you check in. This offer is only available when you stay at a Lakeside resort or hotel. We are so grateful to these wonderful attractions that are offering this savings to our guests.
We have heard many stories about when they will be able to fix the lake and it seems like they are hoping to have the breach fixed and water back in the lake by September.
We wish we had better news for you.
If you do need to cancel, we will understand, but there are so many things to do here at Sunset Bay. The lake is just one of our many amentites.
Please go the the following website for information on Lake Delton
Just got off with Jessica. Jimmy the Tulip - Opps wrong nickname - Chicago Skyline will be there. Baker's sent me a coupon for a 15% discount good until the water comes back!
