Just heard this:
Corzine may closing a number of State Parks due to budget cuts. And guess which one is on the list? High Point.
Time to make a couple of phone calls...
Yeah, I heard that on the local news last night and was planning to PM you this morning. I guess my first question would be is it just the "staffed" portion of the park that is to be closed (like where the picnic areas and monument are)?
I think a few of the roads we have on our route pass through portions of either High Point State Park and/or Stokes State Forest. If Stokes is not being effected, then at least those roads will not be gated off but I worry that the one road through High Point may end up closed. (Looked at a map real quick, and it looks like Sawmill Road is part of High Point, but Sunrise Mountain Road, which was the five mile one-way road, is part of Stokes and should be okay)
Let me know if you can find out anything from the Parks Department about the roads cutting through High Point and whether or not they will still be open.

I took a quick look on the internet to try and figure out what the closure schedule would be. A couple of facts:
The budget needs to be passed by July 1st, so in the short term, we should not be impacted for our run. I don't see them getting the budget passed and processing all the necessary paperwork for the closures and resultant layoffs in time to impact our June 21st Run.
Looking at the bigger picture though, five of the nine parks slated for closure are in the Skylands region of the state (versus 2 each for Shore and Delaware Regions). This would make a huge impact on the region in which I live, where we are proud of the fact that we preserve a lot of NJ's wilderness and beauty, and can debunk the belief that so many have that NJ is the industrial armpit of the country. I am personally appalled that the governor plans to close these parks to save a few bucks in the budget.
Time to write a letter to my Congressman.

The story was front page on the The Star Ledger today - closings are slated for July 1st if it goes through at all. I felt like I got a reprieve from the gov'nor when I read that.
The Star Ledger had a very nice autumn picture of the High Point monument, but I like ours better...

Add Dawn and I to the attendance list.
Also, we should send the Star Ledger pictures or tell them about our event and get coverage while detailing the plight of the park closing.

That's an idea. There's nothing wrong with being "self serving" when the self is in service of others.
I don't think we have to worry about this issue for our particular event, but it is going to put a heck of a damper on the families who frequent the parks as an inexpensive way to have a fun vacation. There's plenty of small businesses in the area that rely on the summer revenue and I can see them being impacted by the closure.
Greetings from Floriday. Great pictures you took! Thanks for remembering me -- I barely remember what I had for dinner yesterday, lol.
Down with park closings -- especially high point. I can't see how they could close that, I imagine the gov't is just using that for publicity to get their budget approved.
Have fun on the pre-run!! I'll be just coming back from a mega 2+ week business trip all over the country (NV, CA, ND, KY, FL), so I may be busy catching up for a bit
Doing a prerun weekend of 4/20 if anyone wants to tag along...
It looks like solli and I will be going for a pre-run this Saturday, April 19th. Let us know if anyone wants to join us.

What a day for a prerun! Great globs of yellow everywhere! Great winding roads and a great ending to it all when we met a new Solstice owner and his wife at the diner/carhop/carshow in Sussex County last night. Best part is that he's as crazed in love with his car as we all are!
Hey MASSC leaders... I knew there would be some pix.. Nice yellows.. What a glorious day.. I had you guys in mind, but couldn't break free till about 2 PM. Went out to the Mendham/Bernardsville area for a little top down.. Wow! Almost too hot!..
Azaleas next.!!
