NEO/PA SOS - Fred & the Salt Truck

Over in the big thread, AR, JV and I mentioned our encounter with a salt truck on our way back to Wisconsin. We were running at speed when we came upon a salt truck in the center lane spreading rock salt across the full width of the tollway. We all moved as far left as possible when passing but took a pretty good pounding from the salt.

This morning Fred got a wash, and a damage assessment. I have attached pics of the damage to his freshly painted grills. Obviously the primer didn't do its job as all of the damage goes all the way down to the base material on the grills.

No damage anywhere else on the front, or to the surround on the grill that was not painted black.

Tweety, can you PM me with the addresses/phone numbers of those salvage yards?

Back to the drawing board for this mod.

Did you use an epoxy paint? That looks nasty. I took a couple of stones during the run, we heard them hit but didn't see where until we got home. One nicked the silver windshield wrap, and the other took a very small chip out of the windshield, low on the passenger side. Guess if you are gonna drive em they are gonna get beat up.

No epoxy. I used auto touchup paint in cans from Dupli-Color. Cleaned grills real well, applied a couple of coats of primer, a couple of coats of black, and then a couple of coats of clear coat.

I'm thinking there was some sort of reaction between the clear coat and the black, as everything got a bit "lumpy" after the clear went on. It could have been a paint incompatibility. I've had it happen before.

At the first stop after the encounter I picked several pieces of salt out from where they were wedged between the grill and the facia.

10-4 on the drive it - it'll get beat up.

On the third segment of the run, I moved to the back of the pack, and so got a chance to follow behind you by a couple of cars. When we were running through at that black stuff in the rain, the back of your car slowly changed color, getting darker and darker, until it almost looked like a SLY.

Then after getting out of that stretch, still in the rain, it got lighter and lighter until it was merely "kinda dirty" PURE.

My wife really likes your PURE.

No damage anywhere except where the grills were painted. (Guess that's why I don't paint cars for a living. )

Sure glad I didn't get mine done...yet!

Note to self, don't use Duplicolor, look for paint with Kryptonite!
