D2, et al.

i will be coming down but using this event to map 2010 stuff (we have SR, SSR, SOS, T2TR and AMISH RUN on the table). I speak fluent GPX now and want to translate this stuff to GPS devices. The goal is to be able to simply give someone an SD chip for 2010 with all of the runs, relevant pics, etc. They plug it into their GPS device, load the relevant maps and there is no confusion....

If someone is interested in running with me, the help would be most appreciated. It won't be fast and furious. It will include a lot of stops at key points with the recording of key turns, corners and exact coordinates of things (I still fear the stop at Ghost town on the SR route.. Want to set in a Garmin course that gives sufficient warning).

Of course, I will need the previous input from the folks that have plotted the routes before I can do this. Need details to start building these maps....

Obviously, I would enjoy you riding in the right seat and/or behind me in your loud ass car (as we have done many times my friend). On the other hand, folks are signing up for this event and want a quality event. i suspect they would prefer that you lead them (you have the experience, and the personality) and would be irate if you left them to follow me.

I am cool with being "pathfinder" and obviously don't mind running alone for long distances. You folks laid down some awesome trails. Just doing my part to refine the stuff in Garmin-speak for a kick-ass 2010 event with technology beyond what anyone has attempted to date for runs.

i just need the rough maps for the runs to do my thing. i promise to meet up with you folks for the evening festivities. Just save me a large rootie. If someone does want to come with me, they should be someone that is not in the mainstream of events and can endure the pain of high level, coordinate mapping. Possession of a Garmin with coordinate capability would be most appreciated.. That excludes You, Mark and Diana given you have responsibilities much higher than that for this specific event.. Doing my thing to help... It will be awesome when i am done.. Trust me...

Whatever works. I'll probably come in Thursday night...assuming people want to run Friday. As we discussed, I gotta be on a plane to Vegas sometime on Sunday, so I won't be running Sunday.

Glenn and I worked out a variation of this during the Madison runs, the diference being that we shot a full in-car video during the pre-run. The route was originally mapped, and a route created, on the computer, and we used the video after the pre-run to refine the directions. The video also makes it possible for someone to pre-drive the entire run on their computer, or it can be edited to just show the turns for a shorter duration video. As a bonus, if the lighting works out, the GPS is visible in the video, and the voice directions are mostly audible.

I am going to be in the area for about a half a day on 19 August, and am planning to drive the shorter runs if I can get the directions. I was planning to create the routes from the directions, but if you have already created them it would certainly benefit me to use what you have. I will definitely be shooting video during the Double-Header for the same purpose.

Alternately, of course, I can do nothing if what I am doing is duplication of efforts.

No duplication of effort but possible synergy. What i would like to achieve is having the garmin pull up the appropriate video or least pics at the right point. The GPX language is capable but of course, the Garmin device may not comply as expected. I was looking to integrate this into the "lane change" stuff, but that resides in a Garmin-specifc db and writing a program to add data to that could cause Garmin issues for users down the road.

For my effort, I would like video and/or pics shot with a specific latitude/longitude or the exact video/pic. That will will help me test and further define the possibilities.

It's been so long since I've logged on I almost forgot how. Count me in for the October run and put me anyplace you need me. Unless there have been major changes made, I still remember the route.

(Mike, give me a call!)
