This week, I found a performance specialist business here in my smallish town. Didn't know they even existed, but talked to a freind who is into riced out Toyotas, and he told me about them. Actually I was looking for someone who could do a crank re-learn for my new Performance Autowerks ECM (besides the dealer that is).
Well I got hold of the business today and we started talking. Turns out he has done some work on Solsti (Solstices? ) including a couple of Hahn Stage 2 turbos. When I asked who he did it for, he only mentioned one guy. I knew the guy from a car show last summer, and asked how the turbo was running. Turns out he baked the engine last week.
I've read a lot on this forum about Turbos, Supers, 2.4 engines being strong, Dashhawk air/fuel mixture stuff, etc. etc. So far, had not heard anything about any baked engines.
Question - is this common? one in ten? one in a hundred? Anyone know? What risk will I take on if I do my 2.4 to Turbo or Super???
Probably the fault of the local shop who did it. Seems that guy didn't even know what a Dashhawk was. Didn't own a tech 2 or any other computer cal device. Not sure how he would have set up a turbo without it.

The motors have been strong. Very strong. I have yet to hear of a blown motor. Hahn knows his stuff. He is a long time veteran to this game. Alot of guys are running in the 300 to the wheel area on stock internals. You got to take care of your motor. Pay attention to your oil levels and dial your a/f right. You should be cool for years.

i'm not sure how many "boosted" sols are out there sc & turbos ? kits or diy as mine............. i would be interested in a number but who knows ?
or what % are actually here on the forum.........
this is the first ever demise i have heard of
it would be nice to actually hear from this car owner
in any event the hahn kit is self contained and requires no tuning equipment.....just a proper install - the tune is included...
..the ecm is already reflashed and a blame game is all guesses from your limited info ?....it doesn't surprise me that a rice shop wouldn't have tuning software for our car.....
......but that doesn't mean he couldn't install a hahn kit perfectly........what work he did ??? you don't say ? ..... actually installed the kit ?, maybe he upgraded the exhaust or radiator who knows ??..
..i don't know what he could have tampered with without software ?..AND hahn's tunes are locked ...so unless there was a mistake in the install ???? ....
anyway makes no sense
dash hawk is just a datalogger- theres alotta aftermarket versions.....this ones a supporting vendor here so ........they get a lot of business here .......
find the "guy" for us and ask him to post up

I'm not to familiar with Hahns kit. I use the werks kit.
Lack of oil will kill you. That would be my first guess. Second would be a boost controller
turned up way too high leaning the motor out. Third guess would be its bs.

I have yet hear of ANY blown engines with a Hahn kit.....as modmods said, oil is crucial but let's get down to brass tax.....it has to be installed correctly (not rocket science), and just as importantly....monitored and maintained. Hahn and Werks kits have been rock solid and so has the 2.4 ! :-)

I could see a rice shop telling them something like this.

Yep. I know of a "race" shop that was boosting their Garrett T28 customer cars to 30 psi and telling them (and a Garrett engineer...they didn't know) that it was ok because they do it all the time.

I think Bill Hahn IS a quality minded vendor that puts plenty of time into his product limitations. My dealings with him and his guys has been nothing but satisfying, interesting and educational. My impression is that he may have more boost experience with the ecotec than anyone. His company is even referred to in the GM ecotec engine build book. With that said, I think it is common knowledge that once you get up around 15 psi. you start running into octane and valvespring problems. Sounds like the three stooges got their hands on a pretty nice ride and fried it.

OK folks,
I spoke with Kyle at Split Decision in Vernon, B.C. again today. I think he's a capable enough guy doing performance mods, but is unfamiliar with our car.
He said quietly that Erin at Hahn has been involved in this problem, so maybe Erin can comment here???
From what I could get out of Kyle (which wasn't much)
- The car was showing some detonation problems this summer
- The ECM was sent back to Hahn for re-flash, and was somewhat better after re-flash, but still not perfect
- The kit was generic and no mods were made locally
- The car was running 8 lbs boost
- He used the term "melted piston" when he described the damage
- Hahn is looking at the issue
Wouldn't give me the owners contact info.

I have put over 3000 miles on my Hahn setup. I can assure you that I do not baby my car. A matter of fact I punish it mercilessly every-time I drive it. I beat the crap out of my car on a regular basis. Nothing but oodles of reliable power.
I am surmising that the person who blew up there motor was over boosting with low octane fuel. The 2.4 Ecotec will let you know about this in the form of very audible knock. My advice for those who are boosted is listen to your motor. If you hear knock turn down the boost or find better gas.

Maybe he put more like 30k on it.
My motor is holding up perfectly with the DDM setup. I beat the crap out of my car, and anyone that knows me knows this.
