Has there ever been a solstice with both a Superhcharger, a Turbocharger? I don't think there ever has been, and i'm making this my project . The efficency of instant boost with a supercharger, and the power of the turbo in the upper powerband. By no means will this be done quickly, i've seen the compound setup take years, and i don't plan to have this take longer then 14 months max. As this progresses, i will let everybody in on what i plan on doing. I'm hoping to get some sponsors out of this, and bring some local attention to our fine shops. All of the Fabrication will be done by myself, and the rest of my team. I hope you guys will enjoy this as much as i will .
I have read a discussion about this, referred to in that discussion as "twin charging". The consensus seemed to be that the newer design turbochargers are good enough in the lower spped range that the benefit of adding a supercharger isn't worth the complications. Never mind the lack of room for such a thing in a Kappa.
Yeah i have been reading all about this, but it still something that would be interesting and room will not be an issue . I am friends with a Z owner, who has found a solution to this problem on his car, and i plan to follow the same route. It will be interesting to say the least
Its possible, but it'd be more of a cool factor than anything. JRinky is right as straight TC or SC is better than both. There are a few twincharged setups that have been completed on css.net and they all seemed to have complications and in the end a turbo only setup yields the best results performance wise.
it would be more for the cool factor, and i'm not denying that. It's just something i always wanted to do. When i was still in germany, my father had a dual/twin charged mercedes, and i always wanted to do that. I never really had a car with the "room",but this one seems to have plenty. I'm excited like a 3 year old at disney land :willy:
I've thought about this for about as long as I've been into the Solstice. While it would be unique and interesting, I'm afraid that's about where it ends. One of the engineering students in my brother's class built a twin charged BMW for his thesis, it was very interesting but performance wasn't as impressive as expected. Also you will find that your efficiencies don't add up with a twin charge system, they actually decrease. You will also run into problems transitioning from one boost source to the other. It needs to be smooth and flawless, that's not going to be easy. In the end I decided against the twin charge and will be pursuing a v8 swap when the time comes. but I do wish you will continue, I'd love to see the setup on a solstice!
I'm planning on going through with this, and i am praying for gain across the powerband. The solstice has loads of room for this, so i don't think it will be that difficult to accomplish. My main concern is the engine being able to handle the power, and the car being able to put it to good use . I'm going to get some pictures of what i had in mind, so you guys/gals can see what i'm thinking about. As far as power goes, i will be happy with 600 at the wheel. It will be a long and hard road, but that is something nobody can get away from.

"Loads of room" ? I installed a DDM supercharger this summer, and have to wonder if we have the same car. Yes, there is room for a turbo on the passenger side, and room for a supercharger on the driver side, but it ends there. The drive belt for the SC uses up most of the room between the engine and radiator, and everything fits so close to the hood that the piping has literally no place to go. With a TC and a SC it is going to be even worse. Or, are you planning to install a new, higher, hood ?
At that point the whole engine will need forged parts and sleeves. Wondering if the crank could even handle that. GM build book says no...but it is very conservative.
Could always do the STS thing and stick the turbo out back, that would free up the engine bay for other fun things ...but it wouldnt be as cool when you pop the hood at shows
We have done quite a few twincharged setups on Ecotecs now, finsihed up a 700hp Ariel Atom twincharge a couple months ago, just not in the Solstice/Sky.
To do a twincharge setup you are going to want to shoot for atleast 500whp to make it worth while, if you are below that a single turbo well setup on the 2.4L can be made to be decently responsive and the extra cost and complexity of doing the twincharge is really not going to be worth it.
The big benefits of the twinchage is that you can run a large turbo with a pretty big A/R ratio and still spool it pretty quickly, since the supercharger effectively increases the size of the engine, and at the same time increases the exhaust energy needed to spool the turbo. Also make sure that you can bypass the supercharger once the turbo comes on, we end up running 2 boost controllers on our setups to regulate boost of the turbo and also regulate when to shut/bypass the supercharger.
For what you are looking at power wise, a M62 supercharger will work just fine and then pick a turbo for your power range. There are also some really good injectors I can point you to for fueling that will allow you to stay with only 4 injectors instead of running a 5th injector.
The hardest part of it is getting the tuning to play well with the switch over between supercharger/turbo and the transistions.
Let me know if there is anything I can answer for you.

To be clear, that wasn't meant as an insult. I just want to make sure everyone reading knows this is not an easy project. I am 100% a shade tree mechanic and I'm proud of it, but as a shade tree you have to realize people like DDM and Mallet have a lot more time, money, and handy tools (like a dyno) to help achieve these goals.
If you have your heart set by all means go for it! I'd be glad to help out! This has truely been a dream of mine for at least a decade!
Ok i just wanted to be sure, and yes i am going for it! like stated before, by no means will this be done in a week or two, but this has been something i've been dreaming about ever since i got a ride in a twin charged banshee ( special FL edition trans am ). I know it won't be easy, but i have a decent set of tools, and i have the ability to use a dyno whenever i want. I'm looking forward to this, and can't wait to have it done .
