I'm still working on the step by steps... but thought I'd share my custom WR lighting. I built 2 controllers, one to send a ground signal based upon the lighting active. Ground out the tail circuit if the tail lights are on (normal mode), ground out the brake circuit if the brakes are on, and nothing out of either circuit if the backup lights are on (backing up... turn it off!). Two relays, a strip board, some wire and a box mounted in the trunk...
Next... the WR Light control. I bought a 19" manual programable RGB LED Light strip, so I needed to build a controller to adjust the colors. The controller contains 6 dials (RGB for tail,RGB for brake) to allow me to custom set a color and intensity for "normal" (when the lights are on), and a seperate color for "braking". Running power from a tap into the tail light circuit, and the 2 ground circuits from my first controller into this new controller. I added a couple of switches, one to turn the whole thing off, one to take the normal circuit (tail lights on) and switch it to the brake circuit so I can adjust the brake color without having to put the brakes on, fewer contortions! LOL The third switch transfers control to a million color RGB controller that cycles thru colors over and over... the "I'm just showing off switch". This controller sits in the waterfall compartment. Below are some pictures from the construction process, followed by the finished product, and a short WMV movie showing the million color controller cycling. Still have to add the battery power setup to allow me to run the million color with the car off, but maybe next week for that.
I'll upload wiring diagrams soon. Have to translate my chicken scratches on paper to something usable that I can upload.
Got the LED strip from SUPER BRIGHT LEDS home. Created a holder for the strip. Bought a Z-Strip from Home Depot (in the flooring section), and rubber malleted it into and L-Strip. Some 2-sided mounting tape and some foam to pad it. I'll be uploading pics of that with the rest of the instructions.
Way to go PNWRaiderFan. Your WR looks awesome. I like the way it changes colors so smoothly. Definitetly an attention getter. Looking forward to seeing the wiring diagrams when you're finished. Control module looks like a central command station - pretty impressive. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.
Just this weekend I was considering taking the red LED strip from my original wind restrictor and mounting it on the side of my current blue-lit wind restrictor and then tying the two together through a relay so that normal mode was blue lit, but when I brake the blue would go off and it would illuminate red. Not nearly as complex as your project but I really like the idea of turning off the WR when in reverse. I also was considering using a magnetic reed switch to turn off the WR when the top was up. I am looking forward to seeing your wiring diagrams and am relieved that someone else has already done the footwork.

Do you have the PN of the strip that you used?

Nice work, Paul.
I combined 2 controllers one for control and the other for drive to give me a RGB, PIC controlled (any color), strip under my WR.
The controller was from Hi-Tec Designs, their Sidemarker light.
The drive and LED's were from fiberopticproducts, their 19" flex RGB LED strip and the RGB Bar Controller.
I wired the output of the PIC of the Hi-Tec to the input of the powere side of the Bar Controller. The Hi-Tec is only designed to drive 2 RGB LED whereas the Bar controller will drive 15 RGB LED's.
This allows the color to cycle slowly thru the rainbow or be fixed on any base color. When the brake is pressed the LED's go to Red. When the Turn signal is activater the LED's cycle from Red (or amber if you want) to the base
color. If the Backuplights are actuated the LED's will go to white.
Found 2 photos. Can get some of the attachment to the WR if wanted
Joe
