Anyone thinking about NASSAM 2017?

Just wondering, is anyone is looking at hosting 2017? No, do don't look at us, we already have our hands full with 2016. [Translation - I'm trying to get folks thinking about 2017 so that this train keeps on rolling!]

While I am new to this forum, many of you have been involved for several years, some have planned a National and many have attended. Is it time to move away from a local committee planning the next National and move to a national committee with people experienced in planning a National event? I'm certain that there are local forum members and maybe a local chamber of commerce willing to assist with logistics.

I've actually thought about this. We have a local tourism bureau here since I live in one of the biggest tourist destinations in the mid-west. What I don't know since I haven't reached out to them, is if the possess the necessary resources to help plan an event like this.

I don't see Planning of the hotel and banquet as the greatest difficulty. Although finding a facility that can accommodate for the size of our group during the peak tourist timeframe and also be close to some challenging roadways could be difficult. I think a bigger issue is getting the volunteers to design and lead/ sweep the many daily cruises that all of us enjoy and expect at a national meet. We look for locations that will give us open exciting roadways and they are usually located in less populous areas. Therefore lodging can be difficult. All of us can say we would like to see an event here or there but getting volunteers for this huge project doesn't seem to be developing. I hope that this annual event doesn't go away but our vehicles are getting older and participation seems to be declining. I hope for continuation and time will tell.

Relatively few owners show up at the Nationals. Those that do tend to go for socialization and for the drive. Holding an event where there are not great roads is not a great idea for attendance.

Personally, I am terrified at the prospect of 2016 being the last NASSAM. My Kappa friends are very important to me and I don't want to lose that. I've helped on several NASSAMs and would be glad to again, but 2016 will be the only one I run. In fact, I had to make special arrangements with work to be able to do this one. With that disclaimer out of the way... :)

There are so many great locations left (although some have infrastructure and personnel issues) including - north Georgia mountains, Michigan, Kentucky (wasn't JRinKY talking about doing this back at the same time Poconos or Portland were announced), South Dakota, New England coast (Solli and Dengel did their time with the Poconos, but there are a LOT of great members up there who could do this), northern California / PCH, southern Canada, etc.

Or maybe change the concept entirely. My wife and I had an idea which has great appeal to us, but would require changing the traditional NASSAM model entirely. What about a Monday through Friday NASSAM from Chicago to Los Angeles on Route 66? It could be done as an ala carte event - people could participate in the whole thing or just portions of it; you wouldn't necessarily need event hotels, just pick a stopping place for each night to get together and let people make their own arrangements; the organizer(s) could set up groups with different stops each day so attendees could customize their own itinerary; and so on. But it would eliminate vendor participation and other aspects of what NASSAM usually is. However, it is an idea if someone wants to run with it...

At the end of the day, I think we're down to going along with whoever is willing to step up and lead the charge for 2017. And if no one does, we're done :(

:willy::grouphug:I've lived in a few areas: Buffalo, Boston, Minneapolis, Florence Alabama, Mobile Alabama, Nashville, Louisville and a few smaller places. All could host an event - even in the summer. While I would love to have an event on the lovely beaches of lower Alabama, my choice would be Louisville because of it's location, lots of things to do, plenty of hotels, and nice (if not great) country roads. Is there anyone on here from Louisville that would join in the planning? My suggestion is that the event becomes what the committee (both local and national members) can support. I'm just rolling this out there.....

Back in May of 2010 it truly looked like the upcoming Canton. Ohio event would be the last. In June a Texas group stepped up and decided to keep the tradition alive. With considerable help from out-of-state Kappa contributors we made it happen. Of course an 18-month or more lead time is preferable, but it is not imperative. Have faith that there will be a National gathering in 2017. Come on people, don't make the Texans step up and pull our chestnuts out of the fire again. :D

I am up for New Mexico! LOL

Having run one, it can be done in a few months, the longest lead time is the hotel if you are having an event rate.

What about a Great White North National for 2016

Having organized many club run event in the past for the Quebec Solstice and Sky Owners Club where we had around 40 cars each time. I am pretty sure that my fellow members of our Club and myself would be able to organized an incredible event here up north in Quebec Canada.

My plan would be to host it in the Saint-Sauveur area. Where I have a minimum of 6 rides already mapped. With Montreal being very close and the Mont-Tremblant Ski village and Casino, it would be an incredible event. At the least a different one.

There is many activities to be done in the area and many incredible road to ride. I know it is in the great white north and very different as culture (French) even if many of us are bilingual..

But please .....tel me .....what would you think of a 2017 GWNNASSM

Great whit north National meet:thumbs::thumbs:

I love it! I attended your Eastern Township event a few years back. It was extremely well organized and a great time. It would be awesome if you and your team took this on. Count me in!:thumbs:

I think GWN event would probably have a limited participation but sounds like a great area. Just like here in MI it may be difficult to get some to drive the distance required and very out of way for many. If GWN is location decided upon I'm ready to go there, passport ready. Still lots of planning for you all. Better then being the end of Nationals and will give GWN a time to shine.

We could do a meet up in Ontario and do a "Kappa Konvoy". Another great reason for doing this in Canada is our exchange rate. Our $ is around 1.70 which means your USD is worth around 1/3 more! We are a 1 1/2 years away so no one knows where the CDN $ will be but my bet would be it is worth less than the USD.

I'll guess the average vocabulary of U.S. citizens at something in the area of 15,000 words and the average number of unique words used each day at around 2,000. For the average Solstice driver on the road, maybe 10. I think we can all pick up enough to get by with French road signs between now and the 2017 summer solstice.

The last time I drove from Montreal to Quebec and back, I was able to understand the road signs well enough, but the prompts on the gas pumps caused me to hesitate. The clerk didn't speak any English, so I had to figure it out.

If Canada wants to step up for 2017, we're in! We have a significant number of Canadian members and I would love to see their neck of the woods from the seat of a Kappa!

There are quite a few of us in the Quebec club who are completely bilingual and would definitely help out on the events. The area around St-Sauveur as Pierre states is so well suited for our Kappas, most of the stores, service stations. restaurants, etc are fairly bilingual. For those who were at NASSM 2014 in the Poconos, the terrain is similar for the woods and slightly more hilly. Day runs could be organized from St-Sauveur to the Townships where we could include North-east states cars that can easily join the runs. Pierre is a great organizer and the event would be as good as any

I like the idea of a Canadian nationals. After all, it is the North American Solstice Sky Annual Meet.

Maybe by 2018 I can work out a group of locals to put together a 2018 meet in Ohio's North cost.

But I'd also still like to see something in Michigan eventually. I know the Heritage Center rents out their space for parties.

Where? North Coast is flatlander territory and full of cities, which is why we went south for 2010.

You do not want a National that spends it's time running thru traffic

Je pense qu'un Nationale a Quebec est un bon idee. les routes sont en kilometres pas mph et le rate du exchange sont presque 35% en faveur des Americains aussi. Bon chance Pierre.....Je prevois d'etre la

If things are still going well for me in 2017, I would like the Quebec idea. It would be a nice 'change-of-pace' to visit Canada. Also, it would be a much closer journey than Arkansas this year (600 miles to Montreal vs. 900 miles to Ozarks).

On the negative end, I need to dump a boatload of cash to get my car fixed up enough to make it safe enough for another long trek.

Tanks for all your kind words

Hello everyone,

It is fun to see that some of you showed enthusiasm on the possibility of a GWNNASSM

To answer all your questions; road sign in Quebec are all pictograms. So it is very easy to understand. The Saint-Sauveur, Tremblant and Mtls are are very bilingual. It would be not an issue if someone is only English speaking. For sure if that happen, it would b.e an intimate National. Would plan for a 200 cars max capacity. Would have a mix of rides, activities and touristic tour.

Now it is time for me to turn around and as my follow Quebec Solstice Sky Owners Club members if they are willing to jumped in that fabulous talks. For ride planing, activities, touristic tour and hotel, you can all considered it done. Now it is to wait and see if others would be willing to jumped in as RC, Sweeper, Volonteers foe reddistrationsration and other task. Most important, I would need someone to take care of the Internet side of it from A to Z.

If someone have other idea for a NASSM, please share it because for me, I need to wait and see from my group. Decision should be made before the spring time.

I'm sure of few of us in Ontario could help with RC and/or sweeper if you can't find enough local people.
