I'd say get a new hard drive, you can probably try to save the existing partition, but most likely too time consuming.
If it were me, I'd find out what type of HD it is, manufacturer and size. Then go to that manufacturers website, download their particular drive formatting utility for dos, and format it. I doubt you have the restore disk from the manufacturer, since you said it's older, and may be long gone by now. You'll need an OS to run on it after the format. If the HD size is anything less than 20gb, I'd get a new one. They aren't very expensive anymore, just saw a 300gb for 80. You could probably get a new 160gb for about 40-50. If you're going to spend the money on a brand spanking new OS, you might as well put it on a drive you can use for a while. Just my 2 cents.
