Hey guys! I recently just plasti dipped my entire car. Let me know what you guys think about it. I did film the process. You guys can see the video here. Also, any suggestions on rims?
I'll never understand why people do this especially if you have a nice paint job I guess if you want to cover up a mess than I can see someone doing it . And no I didn't waste my time watching the video I've seen enough of these to form my opinion again it's my opinion .
I started out thinking, why? Why would you want to do this? When I saw the Solstice in red I couldn't imagine wanting to cover that beautiful paint. After the video... I'm impressed. That gives the car a custom look and it really looks good. Very interesting. Super job and thanks for sharing. I'm a firm believer that personal touches on cars are just that...personal. I appreciate your effort. Great job and keep on sharing.
Thanks guys. Of course I love my red paint. Wouldn’t ever change that color permanently which is why I did plastidip. Anyways ! Any suggestions on wheels?? I love the multiple spoke look. I loved the wheels in the left picture but the company no longer makes the rim. You guys know any similar wheels? By the way. Here’s another photo of my car after a few days of being dipped.
Impressed by the video production values. Nice job with the plasti-dip, althoug not personally a fan of the semi-matt finish (on this or the factory job on other expensive cars where this seems to be a fad now).
But you like it and I'm sure many others do too, so good for you!
I probably would have chosen a trendier color/finish since it's removable, but like you said it's temporary. I like the beginning of your vid, I've always looking for what I call car porn of the Solstice (but don't google car porn) so you might consider offering your videography and editing services to other car enthusiasts. I especially like it when drone footage is edited into a car video.
I've thought about doing mine from time to time just to change the color for a while but I never have. Now that it's not going to be my daily anymore I might someday. One of the things that always kept me from doing it was not doing the extra work to spray the door jams and area's like that. Looks like you didn't do your jams either. How much does that bug you when you open the doors?
Yes it handles very well. Since it’s a lot of coats of plastidip the material is quite thick. If you aren’t intentionally trying to peel the dip it’s quiet hard for it to come off. Also, I did put a product called dip coat which helps add even more protection from the sun and casual wear which I didn’t mention in the video. As for the unsprayed areas such as the doors, it doesn’t actually bother me too much. The only time I see it is when I open the doors but I see it for a split second. It’s also more of a weekend car so I’m not constantly going in and out of it. And as for the door handles, I did Plasti Dip then just so I wouldn’t have to mask it but I removed it as well as on the badges. And thanks ! I love showing off my car in the best way even if it’s bone stock. . So I tried to do the best cinematic shots I was able to come up with !
This was the rage of the off roading world about 10 years ago. I got caught in it on my FJ and did my tail lights a smoke color, I still have some of it on the tail lights and fight it every time I wash the truck to get it off. After ten years of trying to get it off, I have nearly succeeded.
I would imagine things have improved on the stuff in the last 10 years or so, but never found it durable enough for off roading. Arizona Pin Striping became a terrible nightmare for some that did their whole trucks.
Not a fan of the matte look to be honest, but have some of it on my car, with a vinyl wrap. Much easier to spray a non high gloss around the mirrors, so under stand the the advantages of the matte look. I just would not personally ever do it to my car, due to the concern of areas not releasing as advertised, which I have had happen to me. Again it was ten years or so ago.
Looks like you did a good job on the car, but I was amazed at the lack of over spray on the floor. Would have thought there would have been a lot more. It is also obvious this was not a first attempt at the skill of painting a car. It appeared you were not doing it for the fist time. For some reason I can not get any sound off the video.
This was actually my first time!! I bought the kit on October 2018 and didn’t do it until March of 2019. I do however have some experience spray painting cabinets which seemed to help a lot. And I wasn’t worried about the overspray on the floor it was really easy to remove ! They have really impoved plasti dip over the course of the years. It was so easy to peel when it came to badges, door handles, etc
I did our son's Vibe w/ white over white just as a protection and to cover up a bad clear coat job done by yours truly. For a car like that w/ 130k miles, it was a god-send. Looks sharp and has weathered well over 3 years. In fact, the bit of damage that did occur over time I fixed with...a new coat. It's not that bad to work with and fairly forgiving w/ the right materials.
I've had some Blue Quartz sitting in my basement just waiting for me to find the time and the motivation to spray my Mysterious Black to be "something different". You might have just got me to the point where I pull the gear out, blow out the garage, and start prepping things for some of the nice weather we're expecting this week.
I think the temptation of this material is the opportunity to just do something different and play around a bit w/o commitment. Perhaps it speaks to my inner teenager before I grew up to be all responsible and bought a 2-seat car with no trunk from a brand that shortly thereafter ceased to exist.
I'm mainly trying to decide which design I head toward. Kinda leaning toward a copycat of a classic similar to my faked up design attached (but in blue/white).

I love the old school corvette look on a Solstice. A couple of people have done that before and I think it looks great. Make sure to post some pics if you do it.
Yes headlights and taillights are clear now haha. It was residue left over from the tape which simply came off with some rubbing alcohol. And yes man!!! Do it!! Don’t even think about it just do it ! I might be tedious but getting out there and doing it. It always motivates me and challenges me when I see other people doing soemthing I want to try ! Especially in this upcoming weather !
