WTB: Norm's Hood

Has anyone seen / have a used Norm's hood for sale? I have seen them on sale in the past.

I don't care about looks, just saving some $$$ vs a new one.

Thanks!

Dave

Funny I read this today. I saw an unpainted Norm's hood about 2.5 hours ago in the back of a paint shop.
@rob the elder - Do you know the owner of the hood I saw at Chip Magic? I doubt it's for sale, I was just curious whose car it's going on.

Most likely Rob's. I know he was trying to get one on for the National, but it didn't work out.

Is that for Punisher or the green car?

I've wondered what your under-hood temps were like with the LS. A nice heat-extraction hood should help (?) if it's an issue.

Blue-ish 2006 2.4, Werks stage 1 turbo, Borla cat-back, DDM braces, Spec aluminum flywheel, Spec stage 2 clutch, Werks aluminum radiator, some gauges, RKSport hood, Morimoto FX-Rs, GReddy Profec, Norm's fenders

In the past it was an issue. You should read about two years of the PunisheR thread LOL

Long story

No shroud, poor fans, no clearance

Cut off radiator and mounts, threw away fans, had to remanufacture the AC high pressure fitting, fabricate new mounts, fabricate front and rear shroud, fabricate mounts for the air dam, modify the air dam, find new fans that would fit the 2.5 inch space, find hoses that would fit the micro clearances available and got it running "warm".

The fans did not come on till 228 which is LS standard. Ran 220 to 230 on a regular basis on hot days for non-freeway driving.

Added oil cooler, helped some. Added Oil pressure gauge and oil temp gauge. Oil temps are never an issue turns out.

Opened up the fender vents and tossed the "site covers" that were blocking air flow inside the engine bay. (see multiple posts describing relocating the coils, fabricating mounts, rewiring - twice, installing new valve covers which promptly leaked and how I finally fixed that issue. Temps dropped a good 10 to 15 F. Much improved.

Wrapped the exhaust from the header flange to the exhaust tips. Another improvement.

Now runs in the ok range under all conditions.

Anticipate the vented hood will help most at slow speeds where it will allow more warm air out of the engine bay and thus more cool air into the engine bay. At speed, heat rejection has never been a problem. The "stock" configuration with the LS engine filling most of the engine bay, the headers radiating tons of heat into the engine bay and the blocking of air flow by the site covers and closed fenders all contributed to reduced airflow through the radiator and the radiator operating against a tall thermal wall.

Found out more than I ever wanted to know about shroud design, radiator design, air flow and its impact on heat rejection, and the affects of altitude (reduced air density) on radiator effectiveness.

Other than that, nothing to say.

Its all documented in the PunsiheR thread with pictures and everything.

FWIW, I have never seen a used Norms hood for sale. More than likely because if someone does sell their car than Norms hood goes with it. I just found this fiberglass Sky hood ($100) and posted it on the Skyroadster forum, but that won't help you: https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/a...739657590.html

My advice, call Norm and throw yourself on his mercy. Maybe he'd be willing to work something out with you. The worst that could happen is that he's say no.

Thank you! Yes, this is my fear - it will be hard to find one. I will have to see if my car is at all competitive in time trial before shelling out for a new one.

Norm barely makes any profit on his hoods at the full asking price. You might find he has stock hoods sitting around that he would part with though.

Yea I guess I'm not the only one having a hard time finding a used hood. Seems like they're impossible to find. Every wrecked solstice seems to be front-end related

Picked up a totaled GXP and had no idea I'd struggle this hard to find a damn hood! I'd even take a damaged one as this will probably end up being a track-only car

I've seen hoods for sale several times on Craigslist. The problem is the cost of shipment and possible being damaged in transit. Some have looked to be in good shape, and some have minor damage. There was a time that Norm had OEM hoods available so you could check with him.

My RKSport hood arrived pretty quickly after ordering, and it's fiberglass, so it's much more difficult to mess up in shipping.

However: the thing isn't really symmetrical and a few of the headlight mounting nut inserts are in the wrong place. That's something you typically wouldn't notice during a delivery inspection, unless you happen to have some headlights to test fit or some kind of template. I had the thing painted and ready to go back on the car before I found this out. It's not what I'd call a high quality product. There's a reason that it's cheaper than Norm's. It's essentially a cheap(ish) knock-off of Norm's GTO hood, without the heat extraction vents or the CAI.

If you're anywhere near DFW, I have a heavily hail-damaged OEM hood that you can have. It works fine, just looks like crap.

raygun if my Norm hood ever gets done, you can come up and pick up the PunisheR stock hood and upgrade your car.
