Like mother like daughter, you never told me that.Guess that would have had the 260 in it,I think the Mark2's had the 289's.They always remind me of Get Smart.

When I was growing up no one knew what it was except that Get Smart drove one. It green with tan interior and the battery was in the back seat (which wasn't really a seat)

As it happens, the owner of the Sunbeam (it's an Alpine, not a Tiger unfortunately) pictured in the flyer just posted on the TAC website if anyone wants it...

Photos from Class day at TAC Preformance Driveing School

Folks:

Im exhausted and a bit sun burned around the edges and frankly had a ball.

Here are some photos from the class today:
http://dragonland.net/20070324

Two Solstii in attendence, COOLSOL driven by Yours Truely and SOL-MAN driven by Brian Cayse, rwc_617's son. Also Karr1008 was there in his Scooby STI - his Solstice GXP deal fell through this fall, unfortunately. The camera didnt find us alot, but you can get a look at the variety of cars that come race at a TAC event. Very good turn out, I heard there were 72 registered students.

The instructors set up 5 features.

One was a "hands" training feature which is sort of like an extremely tight autocross course made up entirely of 90 degree turns that go right left left right left left right left left right. The course is run at idle with instructor walking along beside. It is intended to teach proper hand technique (I have 30 years of bad habits to overcome here), what a "late apex turn" is as well as how to read a course and figure out when a combination of turns can be smoothed into a single turn of constant radius. We got 5 passes at this feature.

We also got to see the legendary Alan Crispin drive this feature in his Miata at a much higher speed in reverse! Crispin is a local guy who has worked as a Hollywood stunt man and does gigs as a demo driver for Mercedes Benz and Porsche. Crispin is also a Multiyear National Champion driver in Autocross, Time Trials, and Road Racing. He also ran the classroom session Friday and did most of the lecture session.

Another feature was an emergency lane change where you launch and accelerate straight into a flare with 3 lanes and a stop cone at the end of each lane, and watch for the instructor to signal one of the following, Stop, Straight, Left or Right. Drivers were supposed to whip left or right, settle the car and ease into the lane then break hard as if a box fell off a truck in front of you. Or break hard into the center lane. Or just drive through the center lane. We got maybe 10 passes at this feature.

Another was a "bean", a kidney shaped loop with a wide arch connected to a chicane. This was supposed to teach decreasing and increasing radius curves, and how to set up a line and when to brake. Each students rode with an instructor as passenger, and did 10 laps.

There was a very long very tight rhythm section slalom that was set to the minimum spacing allowed by SCCA (30', I believe). We ran down it, did a u turn, stopped to see if anyone was on course setting up cones we may have knocked over, then ran it in reverse. This was intended to teach us to make an early turn-in and constant, close and quick turns. We got about 6 passes at this feature.

The last feature was 2 boxed 180 corners that we drove in a crisscross 2 laps. The first run was with an instructor. Then we got about 5 passes by ourselves. We were encouraged to drive this one as hard as we dared after the orientation pass.

Tomorrow we compete. The competition session is open to non-students. I believe the walk-up fee will be $25 for a non-student.

That's a LOT of value for $35, Bob. Thanks for sharing that with us. :grouphug:

Hope you're having fun at today's competition.

.
I did have fun. I got to work timing and announce the first run group, since all the best drivers were working instruction, the 2nd years such as myself were taking on the more technical worker positions. It was hot though. I drank a half case of water out there today. I met a lot of new folks chatting with my neighbors on the starting grid. I saw Karr1008 get bit by the autocross bug, I think.

I didnt do spectacularly well this event, however. My best time was almost a full second out of 60 off of several folk I typically run with. I learned an important lesson today the hard way about heat gain in my tires and the limits on bleeding off excess. I only had one clean run today and in the past I have rarely ever coned.

TAC School Competition Day Photos

Folks:

This was the busiest grid I have seen at John Hunt Park. We had 95 entrants and well over 130 cars counting spectators and support vehicles.

Here are the photos:

Bob is right....I got the bug now. It was fun. Need to buy me some cones now:lol:

The 3rd group photos are no where to be found. I hope someone took some but, I doubt it since all I can tell is that I was freakin exhausted from the standing on the field till about noon and the temperature was like 90 degrees and then the wait for the 2nd group to run so, We didn't get to start until around 3PM and by then I was already worn out but I did my best effort not to crash and burn...jkd. Seriously, by then, with those temperatures, it gets hard to drive fast. Still, it was a blast of a weekend.

I hope to see more Solstices in the next event but it is kind of hard to find people in the area that even heard of this site or such events. I know there is a Mean and a Black GXP in Madison but that's all I have see.

Ya know, I have thought of printing up some business cards with the Solstice Forum and some with the TAC site URLs on it to carry around when I run into folk who have Sols or other interesting cars.

I got the idea from the Tennessee Region SCCA's Introduction Cards:

New GXP on its way!

I am totally on board for the Alabama Solstice Club when my GXP gets here, which should be towards the end of June. I would love to get together with some of you guys and get to know my new family. :grouphug: Hopefully the GXP will be here in time for the Nashville meet.

I should thank Bob, or ehresman, for inspiring me to get a GXP. I saw the one that he ordered at the local dealership in Huntsville, and I wanted to order my own mysterious. I will be out to a TAC event as soon as I get the car broken in and get comfortable driving it before I go out and autox it.

I never went to see it myself :( . Im afraid I would loose my nerve and blow my first season with a class change ;) . I plan on dropping by when they can take orders on the 2008s (should be soon) and see if I can get things set up for a December or January delivery. And I am liking the new "Envious".

Keep an eye on the calendar I post here:

http://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29062

... and come on out! Next Huntsville event is at Milton Frank Stadium, TVR#1 on May 12. If you got anything the least bit nimble to drive there is a CLASS for it. Or just come out and watch, but it is so much more fun to be behind the wheel!

And if you got anything fairly beat up hiding in your garage, then we also have Rally-X. Here are some pictures from the event April 14 at the Greenbriar exit on I-565:

Next post will be some stuff from TAC#1 at John Hunt Park.

Rainy days and Sundays.....

...always get me.... :driving: :woo: ...going.

Messy, miserable, cold, sloppy, slippery... FUN! TAC#1 was a hoot!
Wet and cold days like this are somethig of an equalizer for folks on
all-weather street tires vs the R-Compound crowd.

Yours truely in the COOLSOL #22 heeling over in a tight turn:

rwc_617 in the SOL-MAN #16:

And Karr1008 in the blue Scooby...

Looks like the camera did not find Brian #19 in the SOL-MAN this time.

Lots more photos from TAC#1 courtesy the Dragonboy:

EDIT: Looks like ALL the photos have been removed from dragonland.net.

Go to an autocross

Bob, it is probably a good thing that you didn't stop by and see her, absolutely beautiful. I almost brought it home. Started all the paper work and everything, but I just had to have a black solstice, that is what I wanted. I would have been happy with the Deep, but it wouldn't have been "mine". You know what I mean? I was stuck on the chrome wheels until I saw the Deep that you ordered with the polished and it looked nice, so I ordered the Mysterious with polished as well. I have been out to the autox a few of times, but I don't have anything to drive anymore, just a truck, that is where the solstice comes in. I hope to get in a couple of events before the end of the season to get some seat time before next season. You are right though, it IS the most fun you can have in your car, clothes on OR off, haha.

For you other bama guys, Bob is right, you HAVE to go drive your car at an autocross. You will have a whole new respect for your car and what it can do and handle. If you are scared that you won't know what to do, head on up to Huntsville to a TAC event, some of the nicest car guys that you will meet, and they will be more than happy to help you out. You don't have to try and win your class the first time out. Just go out and drive around!

I do know. I am the second owner of COOLSOL and there are some minor frustrations. A polite way to describe the car might be "not loaded". But there are some positive surprises too - cloth seats, even black ones, are not so hot as leather on a clear and sunny day. I have a catback muffler, and it is way too loud to enjoy the stereo. But the admittedly minor HP boost is sufficient that I have yet to lose a street duel to another (base) Solstice.

I think my GXP will have the stock muffler and end up with an electronic exhaust cutout valve so I can flip a switch and go or flip it again and listen to music. I hear from various folk in the autocross community the GXP's turbo plumbing is quiet enough that many are racing them completely sans muffler. Some even complain they have to lose the muffler get enough rumble to tach the car by ear.

I was stuck on the chrome wheels until I saw the Deep that you ordered with the polished and it looked nice, so I ordered the Mysterious with polished as well.
Somehow the polished Al just looks more "industrial" or "high tech" (and less, shall we say, "urban") than the mirror reflective chrome. Wouldnt want anyone to have to do a double take to see Im not wearing spinnaz...

I have been out to the autox a few of times, but I don't have anything to drive anymore, just a truck, that is where the solstice comes in.
I havent seen it done in Huntsville, but trucks are running autocross in Chattanooga every time I have been there. One of them even turns a very respectable time (I really wonder how he has it setup to keep it from being tail happy). And several folk in Huntsville are competing Subaru Forester SUVs completely in earnest.

I hope to get in a couple of events before the end of the season to get some seat time before next season.
If you take delivery when you expect it and allow, say, a month for break-in, then you can hit 10 events this season without even leaving town. They seem to have concentrated on Autumn in setting up the schedule this year. Not quite enough to complete either points series, but plenty enough to scrub the green off before next season...

You are right though, it IS the most fun you can have in your car, clothes on OR off, haha.
I wouldnt go QUITE that far... but autocrossing the Solstice is one activity you might use it for that decidedly NOT awkward.

Amen Brother! :yesnod:

I would like to see a concentration of Solstice A-Xers form around here. It would be fun to show up in force at some different events and see if we can steal a few trophies.
