Death Kart GXP build

Hi guys,

My buddy and I have been wanting to do a 'vettekart/ exoskeleton type build the past couple years and just settled on step 1 of acquiring the car.

We were originally looking for a tired C4 Vette to use for the build, but with their appreciating prices, we started looking other places and ended up getting a good deal on an 07 Solstice GXP with 107k miles on the clock. (I used to own a Saturn Sky with the NA LE5 2.4L that I turbocharged so I was pretty familiar with the cars). Thinking with the cars lightweight and since it is already designed to be a roadster, it may have even better rigidity once hacked up and be lighter than a C4 vette.

We are planning to do the tear down and fabrication over this winter, along with selling all of the unused parts like body panels and interior, and then start on some light modifications to the factory LNF turbo engine to get us through the summer.

Then, beginning in the fall, we will begin building an LS based replacement for the LNF, likely just an junkyard aluminum 5.3L with cam, head gaskets and stud swap of course with a turbo setup :)

Planning to use the car for general mallarchy, car cruises, car shows, power tour, driving it to work on nice days, burnouts, drag racing, maybe some autocross. Just a cheap, fun toy to enjoy on the cheap.

Ya good luck with the build. Did you get the Idea before Freiburger and Finnegan? Or did that spark your interest? Thought that was a cool build. Should be a blast. Make sure you posts Vid of the burnouts, this forum loves burnouts!

Yep a few years back when I first saw the roadkill Vette Kart build I knew I had to build one. Honestly it makes so much sense when you can get running C4s for 1k-2K. I joked with my wife they would be worth more money as a VetteKart than a regular junky C4 haha.

I also have a few mini-buggies, 150cc-250cc adult sized go karts and have had some VW rail buggies and just love the idea of something open air like this but with some real power that I can legally drive to work.

Then came Cleetus Mcfarland's build with his C5 Vette Kart build with twin turbos that so far has ran low 8s in the quarter mile and is likely going to hit 7s this coming summer.

I saw this advertised on CL earlier this week and thought about contacting you because I'm not that far away. Thought about the hood, maybe fenders, etc, but don't have a way to get large parts back home, dammit!

PM me where your located. If not too far from 48382 maybe I can drop them to you, I have a trailer. I'd love to sell as many parts to one person as possible so I'm not spending the next two years piece mealing this thing out lol.

I would be interested in the interior door panels and the entire driver's seat if you are changing them out. Please let me know what you want...

You should have actually looked for a flood car from Texas...they're a dime a dozen down there right now.

I'll PM you on the parts.

We looked at a bunch of options for wrecked cars, salvage, etc. But this car popped up for sale locally, running and driving with a clear title and only 107k miles for a good price. And once we sell off all the parts we wont need, it will be a very cheap investment. We almost had a deal on a CTS V, but the price was a little higher than we wanted, and the car had some front end damage that also made it a crap shoot to what all needed replacing, so the Solstice was a solid safe bet.

It'll be easy to replace the battery ;)
That is for sure!! We'll probably go with a smaller motorcycle type AGM battery as well for some weight savings. Hoping my kerosene heater will get the garage up to a comfy temp tonight so we can start tearing into this thing and get some pics up.

Spent 6 hours Saturday tearing the car down. Still have to finish removing the bonded on quarter/rocker panels and the rest of the interior but the car came apart pretty easily
