would you guys actually buy a solstice with a salvage title? seems very risky
I dunno because it seems like insurance companies are quick to total repairable Solstice's, and I'd want to see pics of the damage before I'd consider one. OTOH, if I was looking for a candidate for an engine conversion than the lower price of a totaled car might be worth considering.

I bought one, and it only had two small cracks on the hood bracket. That is what constituted frame damage. I bought it for 2000 dollars. It also had a blown engine, so I replaced everything from the windshield forward. Some of it could have been saved, but I did not want to deal with it. I put about 6500 in the car, and it drives like a new one. No rattles, actually is quieter than my pampered one with 30K on it.

I bought it in August, finished it shortly after Thanksgiving. Pictures on this site.

I doubt I would buy one that was completed. I wanted to see the damage.

Most are totaled because the owner wants them gone. Parts are getting more expensive so the value is going down. A serious frontal crash is going to total the car no question.

500 for a fender
1000 for a hood
500 for all the bracing.
500 for headlights
3000 in body work and paint. It does not take much else to end the car.

Now if you replace with used parts and know a body guy, you can make out on them

Hoosier GXP would be the guy to ask on this. He has redone 20 plus of these. He must be making some money on them I would guess

Being in the body shop business back in the day, it's incredible what insurance companies will consider totaled. And a lot of the "totaled" cars are "back room" deals where the owner wants $$$$. So, lets say you have a Solstice worth $10k. You have an accident where the body shop puts together a $2k estimate. Now the owner knows the body shop manager...a personal friend (or the body shop manager wants the car!!). He tells him he doesn't want the car back, so find some "frame damage". So the body shop manager invents some frame damage and puts on the estimate...now the est is at $6k. Most shops are now "direct repair" anyway, which means the ins adjuster never comes out to look at the car. Why? Because the car is only worth $10k. So the adjuster signs off on the check for $10k, but the owner wants the car back (or the BSM wants it), so they pay the ins. $2k for the car because that's all they'll get for it at auction. The BSM calls his buddy and says he's going to fix the car for him for $2k but it will take 12 weeks because they won't work on it all the time, just when they have no work in the shop...no problem. So the BSM documents all damage in photos, and in 12 weeks the owner/BSM walk away with a car for $4k and $6k in his pocket!! I can't tell you how often this happens in the body shop world.

FYI, I've been trying to bump this thread up once a week (Sundays). The rest of the week when I find a car that is around $5K, I've been using the edit feature to add it to my last posting. That way this thread isn't popping up to the front of the forum every time I find a low priced Solstice throughout the week, but then that might also be a downside if someone is trying to be a first responder. The only suggestion I can make is to check the thread to see if I have added new cars throughout the week.

I will try and start post on Sundays and edit the post with new CL finds throughout the week. Generally speaking I only post cars priced close to $5,000 (and lower) in this thread.
