I took my 2006 Mallet Solstice to the Ames Performance Tri-Power Weekend with every intention of drag racing it Sunday. After going thru tech and being told that I could not run it as it was obviously faster than 13.5 in the 1/4 mile, and it did not have a roll bar, I reluctantly entered it in the car show side of the event on Sunday.
As a side I got into a discussion with the inspector as to when the NHRA changed the convertible rules from 12.5 to 13.5. The answer was because these older cars do not have airbags or anti-lock brakes! I informed them that my car was equipped with both, they said I still could not run it. I then watched many other older convertibles not equipped with roll bars running in the low 12's and nobody said a thing. I did not either as I didn't want to cause others to not be able to continue competing.
So off to the show side were the next discussion on what class to enter it in? Not Solstice because it was not Stock, not street because it was not heavy enough modified and lacked all the Bling the winning cars usually have. They Finally decided to put it in Post war Pontiac Open.
Fine as I really didn't expect to win anything as I was not planning on showing the car, and did not properly prep it. But it sure did attract a crowd, and I was kept busy for a couple of hours explaining what it was. 2 or 3 people knew what it was, and when I went to drive back over to the race side around 3:00pm to say goodby to my friends that had just been knocked out, I was stopped by the show staff and told I could not leave the show side as I had won a trophy and they would not ship it! Ok the awards started at 3:30 so I stuck around.
It won 1st place in uncategorized Pontiac's 2nd pace was a 1961 Starchief Enforcer Police car, 3rd place was a 1982 Pontiac Phoenix SD. My wife says it just confirms I only own fast uncategorized Pontiac's!!!! LOL!!!!
So after attending the event on the race side for 25 of the 28 years it has run, I finally won a Trophy. On the race side the best I have done is the 1/4 finals in street.

Just what I did on my 1 day off this weekend.

After that story I'm not sure whether I should offer my condolences or congratulations.

I'll go with congratulations!

Sounds like even after the disappointment you had a great time - and that's really what counts.

Thanks everyone, I am much more of a racer than a car show guy, this is only the 2nd time I showed a car at that event, the other time was when the cluch went on my 78 Sunbird wagon on the 1st time trail on the 1st afternoon about 15 years ago. I just realized I forgot to attach the picture of my 1st Tri-Power weekend Trophy. Talking with the judges I was Surprised to learn that the only other Mallet ever seen at the event was in 2005 when Mallet brought a non running prototype to the Show. They also said the only Coupe ever seen there was Brought by Pontiac in 2008. There were only around 5 other Solstice's there this year.

It is a pretty generic trophy, only the 4 very large ones Picked by the Sponsor actually had the class on them.
