OK, in a recent thread where I continued to slam the Pontiac cut-and-paste grill, Dave Clancy very innocently said...

Jimbo I always thought you liked the front end, if I recall you never mention that you disliked the twin grille. To me you have always been positive on the looks of this car
Well Dave... Love the car. Hate the grill.

Truthfully, I had no clue that I hate the grill this badly. By popular demand, here she blows!

Dave, this is just for you buddy!

The Solstice is curved, classic, integrated, well detailed, looks carved of a piece and is just mesmerizing. It looks a little soft for a serious sports car, and I am not and have never been crazy about the front end of the car.

The front grill looks awkward. Pontiac is slavishly trapped in a grille shape that looks strained on this car. It looks out of place. The front end seems to bulge or curve a bit too much for my taste, vertically. And the jeweled lights seem to be angled inward as the silver portion behind the lights, which follows the front fender creases, is somewhat outboard of the lights. I keep having to get used to the front end looks over and over and wish it was more bold, more masculine and more outward rather than everything kind of rolling into the grill.

Y'all can hate me, but I would get rid of the front grille. It looks out of place on the car and ruins the front end. Pontiac is trapped with this "family identity" being tied to the grill and it can really hurt a design, like this car. First it doesn't look that good, and second it causes the problem with the license plate looking horrendous covering the grill.

The front end could have looked much better with a completely difference grill design. In fact, if an aftermarket company offers a really beautiful front fascia/grill, I'll pay their asking price to improve the front looks of the car.

Everything else on the car looks wonderful (well, I would wish for a thin wheel gap over the gaping ones on the car), but the front grill is an eyesore.

What I dislike about the Solstice's looks

Front grill
large wheel gaps
high beltline
Width

By contrast, the ONLY think I hate about the looks of the Solstice is the stupid signature Pontiac front grill. Well, I wish it didn't have the big fender gaps either.

To which I answered...

FWIW, I don't like it either. If the aftermarket makes a sharp replacement front valence & grill, I'll buy it.

Sometimes I'm a little ambivalent about the looks of some of the design details on the Solstice. I don't like the Pontiac grill. The car is REALLY wide and the high belt-line makes the car look stubby. It has big wheel gaps. From straight on, the front end can look imposing and the headlights can look awkward. I'm desiring perfection here, so I am nitpicking like crazy, wishing all these little details were drawn to MY version of "perfection".

Someone posted the Gravana body kit on s2ki.net. Most people responding to this thread seem to like it.

I'm hoping someone creates a front valence that keeps the Sol's basic shape but replaces the ugly twin grill with something classy and sharp!

By the way, I'm not saying it can't be better looking. It is kind of stubby, a bit cross-eyed, too wide, with a high beltline and a signature grill I don't care for at all. Just I think whatever GM has to package under the new car will make these things even worse, not better, combined with whatever goofy new laws we are stuck with.

The 2nd Gen Solstice COULD look better - it just won't. :brentil:

Just for the record, I still detest the signature front grille and I think Von Holzhausen chould have done better if he were not constrained by it, but the look of the grill won't stop me from buying a Solstice.

Signature grill not like the Pontiac grille or redesign the entire Pontiac signature grill to get rid of this embarrasing thing. There must be some new double kidney style grill that looks classy on a wider variety of cars. Or else make very distinctive grill elements that are distinctly Pontiac without actually having to cut and paste a specific shape grill on every car.

Please, Pontiac, PLEASE, find a classy replacement for the years-out-of-date ugly split grills on your cars.

It looks terrible on the Solstice, worse on the G8 and even worse on the G6 GXP. PLEASE! I am begging you.

Stop the madness!
.

A twin grill is fine but Pontiac should allow some range of design to suit the various different car models these grills appear on. The G8 grill looks cartoonish to me. It looks so bad it could be mistaken for something I could design. Design is hard. Family resemblance is even harder, unless you car Honda and make all of your cars look like scale models of one another.

But this insanity of family resemblance just has to end. Stop hamstringing your designers with this ugly crap. Could you imagine if they forced the Camaro and Corvette designers to use a front grille from the Malibu and Impala?

JUST STOP THE MADNESS! :brentil:

jimbo .... its really quite funny - the last few days I have been noticing not just Pontiac grills but others as well. There are many *split* grills that are - shall we say - less than desirable! Pontiac is NOT the only one that continues to have perpetuated this design ..... while I can not at this moment recall the Automotive manufacturers.

Kathy, GM is far from the only car company engaged in this abomination. The Subaru nose is flat ugly. The gaping Audi toothless cave is way too havy looking and that virus is spreading out to Volkswagons as well.

This slavish family resemblance is an act of pure idiocy.

Now here is a quiz for everybody on the Forum. No cheating...

Quick, describe the signature Ferrari grill...

Oh how *picky* we have become!! :glol:

While I have modded my *split* grills to somewhat soften the effect ... I would still rather have those split grills than have a car that looks that a salt water fish.

I don't recall the concept car that was once posted here ... but the grill on that monstrosity made it appear to be a whale feeding on krill .... only uglier!!

i think if the grill were set deeper in the holes and made of real metal chrome it would look good. Or, even if it were outlined in chrome with a flat black inside.

I don't think pontiac should ditch the split grill, it's been a trademark since 1959. Though, it could stand to lose it's rounded kidney shape for something a little sharper on the edges.

I actually almost bought a Sky instead of a Solstice because I did not particularly like the look of the front of a N/A Solstice. But I did not like the back end and the interior of the Sky vs. the Solstice. Then I saw a GXP and it made the front end tolerable enough for me to now favor and order a Solstice GXP. :yesnod:

the Grill is fine

I compared the Sol to the sky.. and just preferred the organic lines of the Sol. I realize it's a matter of taste but the sky just looked too "bolt on" for mine. The Sol seemed much more integrated and flowing.

I like the grill on the GXP. Way more subdued. If you get a Mysterious, you can barely see the grill. Too prominent on the NA Sol though.

The Solstice grill has never looked good to my in pictures. Something about the 2D perspective ruins the affect. I do not mind it at all in person, and rather like the grille on the GXP's with the additional break duct grills around the turning/fog lamps.

Not sure what else they could have done. A deep set grille may have looked good, but overall it would still be similar. Smaller grille would have created a lot of painted front end fascia, which could become too much colored surface the way the front end rounds off (instead of coming to a point).

Hi Mena,
I agree that the N/A grills are prominent. What works with that, in my opinion, is upgrading their really cheap-plastic looking finish in some way. I really like what chrome/silver does to the N/A grills, they look so much better in person, but black and other treatments work too. I really disagree with Jimbo. I think they are an integral part of the appearance and front end sweep of the car and flow consistantly with the twin nacelles that continue the idea on the back end to complete the look perfectly. But the grills are SO prominent on the N/A they NEED to help look their BEST.;)
