After researching Mazda Miata production figures, I found that they have
fallen off a cliff in recent years, especially this one. The peak production
(worldwide) was reached in 1990 when 71K were produced (35K to the
US). It's been downhill ever since. Mazda issued a press release in early Sept
that showed North American sales (US & Canada) of 4781 thru August 30,
compared to 6874 the previous year (down 30%). 9356 Miatas were sold in the US last year, and if true to form, that would mean approx 18K worldwide.
Corvette, by the way, has been very consistent over the past six years , selling 33,33,35,34,35, and 34K cars in those years. It looks like Solstice
will probably top Mazda in spite of having only half a year's production in 2005. My opinion is that Mazda never improved their car in any significant way
and what's worse, their car requires premium gas (since 2001).

The fact that they had a plant fire in Dec that shut down production could have a lot to do with the 05 sales figures. After the clean up they only made a very short run (domestic orders) before changing over to the 06.

And for 06 the OM says premium is recommended and that you can use lower grade fuel but with reduced performance.
