Hello, all! I'm new to this forum, but thought I'd give you my impressions from yesterdays (8/17/05) ride and drive at Alameda Point.

I was fortunate to be in the first group to take the Solsti out on the closed course and then the street drive for the day. They had a 2005 Miata and a 2005 S2000 for us to compare against. First off, my stats. I'm 5'10.5"-5'11" and weigh in at about 3 Bens. Yes, I'M a LARGE dog! I poured myself into the Solstice first. These are the pre-production vehicles, so they asked us to be kind. The one I first drove had passenger seat-belt issues, so it was a "driver only" test. ;)

First, these have GREAT low end torque! Launches like gangbusters and pulls real well. ABS is of course, optional, but THESE testers had it. Stops are super and straight. The course then goes left-hughey, then curves back around to the right before a RH hairpin. Tracks real nice, can really leave it in second and steer with the throttle. :D After the hairpin, a right-left-right slalom before another hairpin at the top, then another straightaway to rumble strips before entering the staging lane. Weekend racers are going to LOVE these things, as they just swallow up the cones without feeling out of control!! Felt solid going over the rumble strips at ~10-15mph.

WOW!! This thing sells for $20K?? What a steal!! I then hit the Miata. Getting in is more like pulling on Spandex. My hips will take a week to recover! Once seated, I take off.....zzzzzz...OH! Must stop! O.K., way more body lean through the corners, slides a little more wide through the slalom before the tires grip, over the rumbles strips....this is a USED Miata, right?? New?!??

O.K. onto the S2000. OUCH! My hips again!! This IS a bigger interior than the Miata, isn't it??!? O.K. take off...hmmm..3 grand, 4, 5-WOW!! Better shift--oops! time to stop! Nice placment through the corners, sharp turn-in to the slalom, handles great through the cones, back to the rumble strips..--Hey! This is a $30K Honda! Why does it rattle so much??

The street drive was a treat. Mostly around Alameda NAS with a short trip out onto the city streets. The car is quiet inside, even at near-freeway speeds. It's really a nice, fun drive! Oh, BTW, Mazda was on the far north side of the base setting up for their "ZOOM, ZOOM Review". We gave them a future view of their competition!!

Conclusions:
--This car is a BARGAIN at $20K! Even fully loaded with EVERY available option, it ticks out at $25K even MSRP!

--There is PLENTY of low end torque for city driving!! You won't find yourself shifting constantly to find the right gear, as in the Miata. The pre-production steering wheel appeared larger than the display prod. models, thankfully!

--The interior is roomy and comfortable, for a roadster! Even though quarters are tight, I wouldn't think twice about jumping in one to head down PCH to Pismo Beach for a weekend (and some clam chowder!).

--The cargo area is small--...enough for two practice golf bags with the top up and one with the top down. Enough space for a couple small duffles for the weekend.

--The reps told us the platform is capable of 275 b.h.p. as is! The GTP version for MY07 is testing now at 255-260 b.h.p.!! Hello, parts bin!!

--WHEN they build the coupe ;) I'll be first in line to order!!

Hazaa!! GM CAN build world class cars! (and roadsters!)

Tim

I'm so glad to finally see a big-daddy like me give a review of sitting in the solstice. We've had lot's of tall guys discuss it, but no wide guys.

Thanks so much Tim.

By the way, I took three tours through the Ft. Worth Stockyards today trying to find the Ride and Drive that someone here posted was going to happen, but I couldn't find it. Either it happened between 10:30 and 1:30 when I was tied up elsewhere, or it didn't happen.

Oh well.

i called my dealer this afternoon for an update on my vin/vom status. he was unavailable because he was in 'training' all afternoon. well.. his training was doing a drive in Valley Forge, PA with 10 solstices , a miata and an s2K honda. he called me back as soon as he got back to the dealership to tell me the car was fabulous -cornered flat and fast with plenty of OOMPH. i could hear the smile on his face over the phone! glad you enjoyed your ride. us 1k buyers only got a couple trips around the block in detroit- not enough to let it stretch out, but enough to confirm our hope that we aren't making a mistake wth this car.
