It's probably glued on or with double sticky tape. Either way, alcohol (fuel, shellac thinner etc.) applied around the edges with a Q tip will release the glue and as a bonus, leave it reusable if you keep it clean.
Picture? I'm not familiar with the shifter on the automatic. If the cap or the substrate it's glued to is plastic, you'll want to be careful with a thinner or fuel. Even if it doesn't smoke or attack the plastic immediately it can start a chemical stress fracture. Over time it could fall apart, even though you've wiped it off.
