Okay, so I've had my GXP now for a few months. One thing I noticed that my GXP does that my base 2.4 did not do when I start the car up, if I press on the brake pedal if feels very stiff at first and takes a few minutes to go down completely. Is this normal? Seems like it needs to warm up a few minutes. My GXP only has 22K on it. My base model never did this.

I also notice when I'm sitting at a light, the whole car feels like it has a small "shake/hickup" to it. Like it has bad gas or something? I only use premium gas and I only use Chevron or Shell. I would say it feels like a rough idle but it is very small. Does not effect performance at all. Car runs like a bat out of hell and has lots of boost.

1st gear is a PITA! compared to my old 2.4 base model. I've gotten used to it, but miss fast launches into first gear. I used to be able to move into first with no problems using my base model, but sometimes I let off the clutch to fast and get the bucking going on. Again, never had this problem with the base. I know it has a different gear ratio for the GXP, but I let my dad drive it and he had the same problem in first gear. Should I try leaving it on aggressive mode or launch mode to solve this problem?

Okay, so I'm going by my bad memory. One of the 3 settings on the stability control or TPS or what ever it's called on our cars. One of them is competition mode or something close to that, and one may be aggressive? And then there is regular? I'm not sure because I'm not in my car at the moment obviously.

If its a hard launch you're talking about I suggest launching at a higher rpm. I've experienced a similar feeling. Anything under 2500 and you kinda bog/buck, much over that and wheel spin comes on fast, you'll find that sweet spot.

Sounds like you have an early 08 without the vacume pump. It's normal. There is a software fix that may help.

The clutch on start up takes some getting used to. There was a lot of discussion about it back on late 07 and early 08 when there were a lot of new owners.

No suggestion on the shake at idle

some excerpts from the manual:

Antilock Brake System (ABS)
This vehicle has Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
with the Antilock Brake System (ABS), an advanced
electronic braking system that will help prevent a
braking skid.
When the engine is started and the vehicle begins to
drive away, ABS checks itself. A momentary motor
or clicking noise might be heard while this test is going
on, and it might even be noticed that the brake pedal
moves a little. This is normal.

Competitive Driving Mode
The driver can select this optional handling mode by
pressing the ESC/TCS button on the console two times
quickly. COMPETITIVE MODE displays in the DIC. See
DIC Warnings and Messages on page 3-37 for more
information. Competitive Driving Mode allows the driver
to have full control of the rear wheels while the ESC
system helps maintain directional control of the vehicle by
selective brake application. The ESC/TCS light will be on
and the traction control system will not be operating.
Adjust your driving accordingly. This electronic stability
control mode is recommended only for use during closed
track events and competitive driving venues.
When the ESC/TCS button is pressed again, or the
vehicle is restarted, the ESC and TCS turn back on.
Notice: When traction control is turned off, or
Competitive Driving Mode is active, it is possible to
lose traction. If you attempt to shift with the drive
wheels spinning with a loss of traction, it is possible
to cause damage to the transmission. Do not
attempt to shift when the drive wheels do not have
traction. Damage caused by misuse of the vehicle
is not covered. See the warranty book for additional
information.

Traction Control System (TCS)
The vehicle has a Traction Control System (TCS) that
limits wheel spin. This is especially useful in slippery
road conditions. The system operates only if it senses
that the rear wheels are spinning too much or are
beginning to lose traction. When this happens, the
system works the rear brakes and reduces engine power
by closing the throttle and managing engine spark to
limit wheel spin.

This is from the '09 Solstice manual, so make sure you have all the systems mentioned above.

Your concerns are understood regarding the braking issues. If you feel there is a malfunction, the dealership should be able to resolve the issue. Please send a PM if you decide to take it in if you want us to monitor the appointment. I hope your week is going well despite this concern.

So here is an update. I've gotten used to shifting into first gear now with my GXP. And I still have to let the car warm up at first start-up so the brakes work properly. After the rpms drop down to 850 the engine quiets down and brakes work fine. I've gotten used to it and have read that it's supposed to be "normal" for the brakes on the 08' GXP.

My little hick-up or slight shake I still get from time to time when sitting at idle still bothers me. I just don't want it to turn into something else that may lead into a bigger problem if I can fix it now. But I still do not have any check engine problems or codes that come up. The car runs great and has lots of boost. Just this weird shake sometimes that I can feel in my seat. It's definitely caused by the engine. Lately when I start up my car, before it warms up, the engine has been making a rough idle sound. It's never done this before. Again, after it warms up, the rough idle goes away completely. I'm worried now that something still may be wrong. Anyone know? My car now has 25k miles on it and I recently had my oil changed. Used full synthetic mobile 1 and poured some fuel injector/carburetor cleaner into my gas tank. Figured it couldn't hurt to try it. I use only the best gas and oil for my car, but am not sure if the previous owner did or not.

Would drop in a fresh set of AC Delco 41-108s gapped at 32 and see if that helps.

Heah, I was thinking it could be the spark plugs too.

I have 3 suspicions.
1) spark plugs
2) cat
3) fuel filter

It could be any one of these, or none at all.:brentil:

Well maybe 2 of the 3. No fuel filter, except the screen on fuel pump in tank.

Does it have an aftermarket tune? If so, I've just learned to live with mine. It is annoying, but goes away once it hits about 170 degrees.

Remember: The brake problem is a low vacuum issue. We live at high altitude, so the problem was magnified on both of our cars. I personally experienced a rather sketchy situation after passing a pack of cars, had my foot in the turbo during the pass (during turbo boost, no vacuum is being generated); then had to hit the brakes hard afterwards. No vacuum, so brakes were relying on the hydraulic assist from the ESC to supplement. (the 08s did not have the vacuum assist pump and instead relied on the ECM to instruct the ESC to supplement). The 08 system does work as designed, but it definitely does not work as well as the more traditional system used on the 07/09. Obviously GM felt that way also, or else they would not have gone back to the vacuum pump on the 09s. We had both of our cars converted to the 07/09 system.

Thank god someone finally showed me a permanent way to fix this problem. So is this now considered a recall type issue or only covered by the factory warranty. I'm pretty sure my warranty is expired. It's an 08' but only has 25K miles on it. Anyone know if this will cost me out of the pocket? The link above showed the previous person had it fixed at no cost.

That link is to my wife's thread. Yes, we did get it covered by warranty at that time. But only because service went to great lengths to document the problem and they documented the "official recommended fix" by GM first. Which was a reflash of the ECM that basically just increased the idle at cold start to help increase vacuum at cold start. And of course that really didn't help much at cold start and doesn't help at all during other low vacuum situations, such as what I described in my previous post.

I really doubt if GM would cover the repair on your car at this point, it has probably been to long. I know others have had the brake vacuum retrofit done at their expense. Hopefully someone will chime in with the cost. My guess would be that it is not cheap, because as you can see from the posted work order on my wife's thread, the work is rather extensive.

This was never a recall item. There was only a TSB that recommended the reflash of ECM. GM never acknowledged this was a real issue, even after an investigation by the department of transportation, which of course found that the 08 system "worked as designed". If it was such a great system, why did they go back to the original design in 09? Building a turbo car without a supplemental vacuum boost pump is STUPID. But hey, what do I know? I am not an engineer......

Just to prepare you . .. others have gone to their local dealers to get this work done and have been told that no such repair exists.

It clearly does but it will probably be an uphill battle to educate / convince your dealer to execute it.
