Does anyone in this forum know, use, or recommend a particular type of radar detector? I know absolutely nothing about them but I'm thinking I may get one.

I swear by my V1 (valentine 1). But the thing is, more and more departments are moving to laser these days. The V1 has laser detection, but just because of the way laser works, it's hard to defeat. When the laser detector goes off, 90% of the time you've already been clocked. You could get lucky... it could be the guy in front of ya, but probably not. Without getting too technical, there's alot less chance of detecting laser unless it's looking right at you. With radar, you usually get alot more warning because you'll pick it up when the cop is lighting someone else up.

Also, any red neon (and I think maybe bright red LEDs) sets off the laser detector, just like security systems and automatic doors set off the radar detector. Trailblazers and Envoys must have neon third taillamps. Every time I'm behind one at a stoplight, my laser detector goes crazy.

Nonetheless, I'll be modding the solstice with a hardwire kit and remote display for my trusty V1.

Had a Escort Passport 8500. Worked very well but I tried a friend's Valentine and got hooked on the arrows. Maybe I'll get a V1 since my Passport was stolen.

I just got a $390 speeding ticket in ATL last month. 83 in a 55, could have used a detector there!

Ouch! They didn't buy the story that you were on your way to donate a kidney I suppose. This was the radar detector that I was kind of curious about. Since I know nothing about them, I figured I'd ask the speed demons in the forum.

By the way, I hope that's the only ticket you've gotten on your record...

Detectors really are not much help around here. Most of the speedtraps use laser, and as everyone has said once it goes off you are already toast.

Also, I have heard comments from police officers who say that they pick out cars with detectors, because they figure you must be breaking the law sometimes if you have one on the windshield. If its a cop magnet, I don't want it in my sports car! Its enough of a magnet!

A hardwired one would be better, but are they as effective?

HOW do you tell if they are using radar or laser, is it buy the device/gun they are holding, or are you in the know by word of mouth.

Once in a blue moon I see a "gun", and I never heard about this laser thing. Even if they don't use laser here yet, I'm sure it's on it's way

I think laser is everywhere (no doubt in LA). They got me with laser with the aforementioned ticket.

It is my only ticket "on record." Hopefully the points won't transfer because I still have a Michigan license, though I may be dreaming.

Michael,

That detector you posted is really expensive, there is hardly any way to justify $1600.

Thanks SCCA HP Racer, I basically had thought as much. I think I'll just leave well enough alone...

I am not sure what differences there are with the actual appearance of the device. However, with a radar its generally on longer and the signal spreads out, which is why the detector picks it up ahead of time. With the lasar, its a direct beam and once your detector picks it up the cop knows how fast you are traveling. Lasar is becoming more prevalent too.
