Just as the title states, has anybody ever tried a single exhaust on the GXP? I have a buddy who is selling a very nice HKS Carbon-Ti muffler that I was thinking about buying and having my other buddy who works at a custom muffler shop put it on. I have had a few four cylinder (tuner) cars and there seems to be no reason for a dual exhaust, except for looks. I can see having a dual exhaust on a v6 or v8 but not an in-line 4 cylinder. Don't get me wrong I do like solo's dual exhaust systems but can't really afford them. I can, however, with the help from my friend make a custom single exhaust :). Any thoughts or concerns with this idea?

Thanks,
Thomas

Yeah I agree, go for it as the dual exhaust is only for looks. A single outlet rear fascia should be really easy to find to or you could take the money you saved and buy something nice from NormsFiberglass.com

Edit: My only concern is the posibility of drone. I know some systems have an issue and it's something you might run in to. Only time will tell.

Thanks for the input guys! Sly Bob, I'm a little concerned about the drone too. I had a 1997 eclipse GSX with a 3 inch HKS Carbon Ti turbo back exhaust that had a pretty bad drone in 4th gear. I am hoping that the insulation technology has increased a little bit since 1997 and since it's not a hard top it will dissipate the sound a little too. I'm just surprised after my search that nobody has done it yet. I would be nice to hear what it sounds like before I do it but I guess I can be the first to post the sound and look of the exhaust once I get it done :D.

You could always insulate the bottom on the inside of the car if you wanted to go that route. Mat or spray form. Just a thought if you put that exhaust on and it does have a drone.

Solo states on their web site that they have bigger problems with drone in designing their systems in the newer cars. They don't have drone with their systems but I guess it's a bugger to design it out.

Solo also have a race exhaust which is only a single. If you are interested in getting a single outlet rear fascia, I'll trade you for mine.

Back to the stock GXP exhaust. I have had mine off and did some investigating and the pipe goes into the muffler about 1/3 to the right. once inside the muffler there's a restrictor or baffle which is a pipe with a bunch of holes in it that runs from front to back. then there's a wall on each side with the pipes running thru to the ends and that's pretty much it. I was hoping to make it more free flowing but it basically fills the middle section which is only about 10in wide and then flows into the pipes. I was going to put a T and bypass the middle but the inlet is offset so I ended up welding it back together and got my angle grinder and cut out a u to the left of the inlet and pulled it back to let the exhaust escape there and am very pleased with the sound. 100% better. It will for sure do the trick for another month until I can get my mach shorty.

^^^I did see solo's race exhaust but it is still a little too pricy for for just a pipe with no muffler. It could be because of the stainless steel which is a very pricy metal but I think I can still create my own for cheaper. Especially, since I have a friend that works at a muffler shop. The benefits of friends! :D. Is that single outlet rear fascia from a base solstice or a custom one? I definitely might be interested in it when the time comes, which shouldn't be to far from now :)

Hi Thomas,

The single rear out is stock. it's the one that's on my 06. i hear ya about Solo being pricey. However, I think for the one I'm looking at it's somewhat fair. 3in stainless ain't cheap. Back to the fascia, yeah, whenever you're ready let me know and I'll take it off and put it in the mail if you would do the same. you can PM or email me any time.
