Taking the Mallett on the Lap of the Lake Ralley

Looking forward to having some fun with the Mallett, signed up for this road ralley in May, and my wife had to cancle due to a coworker breaking his leg and hip in an auto accident and they canceled all the other employees vacations until he returns in 8-10 weeks.:(

I still plan on going, but I may be doing it Solo as my other 2 go to car people can't make it due to work. Lucky it isn't a competitive rally that needs a navigator.

Is it wrong that of all the cars what interested me most besides the Mallet was that beautiful blue P1800ES Volvo?
When I was in Jr High (well over 50 years ago), there was someone in my hometown in northern MN that had one. It was frequently parked by the post office, so I assume he/she worked somewhere nearby. Those cars have always had a soft spot to me.

Check out the relatively new Cyan Racing P1800. HOME | VOLVO P1800 CYAN I'd say it's on par with the brillant Singer Porsches.

Final Pictures from day 1, in the Motel Parking lot, in She-Boy-Gan WI. We had a nice dinner then went to a great old Ice Cream shop on the mouth of the Sheboygan River, sat with the owners of the P1800ES, found out they live about 10 miles from my house! Small world.

Day 2 was a run from Sheboygan WI to Escanaba MI. we elected to not go to the P&B Motorsports a classic Volvo Restoration & race shop in Larson WI,

we headed up the Door Peninsula to Sturgeon Bay WI for lunch. Didn't take many pictures on this leg, my Bad. We made a couple of stops to see some boats along the way. 1st stop was in the Town of Manitowoc WI to visit the Museum but it was closed on Tuesdays, so we just stretched our legs along the river walk, and looked over the Museum Ship the USS Cobia, one of 28 WWII Fleet subs built in Wisconsin

Then we stopped and took a self guided tour of the ex US Army Tugboat USS Ludington in Kewaunee WI https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tug_Ludington

As we where pulling out of the Tugboats parking lot I spied this large Grandfather clock, I know nothing more about it. Kewaunee Area Chamber of Commerce World's Tallest Grandfather Clock

After lunch in Surgeon Bay WI with the driver of the Black Lexus Coupe (powered by a 4.0 V8. I didn't know they put a V8 in them. We headed for the UP of Michigan and the best meal we had on the trip at the Hotels restaurant, along with a flight of local brews. Nice day. More pictures to follow.

Rob, if you are interested in this type of thing they are having one close to you in August I would be very interested in it if I were closer, and had the time available. If the Lap of the lake was any indication of the type of people that attend it will be a good time on great driving roads, with some interesting cars thrown in. My V8 Solstice really opened some eyes on this trip, yours would probably make a much bigger impression!

End of day 2, Drove north along the west coast of lake MI to the Escanaba in the UP of MI. To a very nice resort Hotel where we had the best meal of the trip and a flight of local beer.😋 Some bad pictures taken as the sun was setting in the parking lot after maybe 1 to many good beers.
Big Mercedes

Jag Long Roof, very rare car in the US I am told. I was not aware they were imported.

Very Nice Fox Body convertible from about 5 miles from my house, never seen it before.

End of day 2.
Love the TR6. I learned to drive a stick in a Triumph Spitfire that had a bad second gear. Taught me a lot about gas and clutch management when going from 1rst to 3rd without stalling.

Keep the pics coming. Really enjoying this post!

Day 3 Started out dodging Deer in the morning going north out of Escanaba to Marquette MI for a stretch of road along the south shore of Lake Superior, a stop or 2 along Pictured Rocks National Lake shore. Best viewed from a boat but you can see a couple of things from roadside parks.

Miners Castle rocks seen from a overlook a short hike from the highway. This was the only stop we made. much better pictures available at the links posted above. This area really needs about 2 days to enjoy, not the 45 minutes we spent there.

Then southeast towards Saint Ignace MI for a view if the Mackinac (Pronounced Mackinaw) Bridge, before crossing over it to the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. These Pictures were taken from the Upper Peninsula looking down on the Lower Peninsula full of my fellow "Trolls" a term used by the Upper's to describe people that live "under the bridge"

On a weird note, the place I found to park was old graveyard that had access to the beach where I took the pictures. This is the gravestone I just happened to park the Mallett next to. I did not notice until we were leaving.

Video I found taken from the C8 Corvette crossing the bridge

Now over the Bridge, and to Cross Village at the Northern end of the Tunnel of Trees.

I was Hoping to have another great meal at Legs Inn, some of the best Polish Food I have ever had made by the Native Americans that run the place. But it was not open for the season yet, actually opened less than a week after we were there, but they were nice enough to let us into the back outdoor seating area. In the past we have had great meals there watching the Bald Eagles that nest in the trees between the out door seating and Lake Michigan soar and feed their chicks. This time no food, and no eagles yet, to early for both. But still a Kool Spot:cool:

For the Polish Speakers

I caught my codriver Peter in this one

Here you can make out the upside down Table Legs mounted above the eaves, that give the Inn its Name.

And one looking out over lake MI from the Patio area

Now off to the tunnel of Trees!

Day 3 continued, traveling south from Legs in and Cross Village along M-119 thru the tunnel of trees, one of the best scenic drives in the Lower Peninsula. This time the stars aligned for this road, usually in tourist season you get stuck behind a RV, or a truck and trailer. The last couple of times I have had to run it top up due to rain and Hail. This time we were one of the first "Lappers" to get that far there was no southbound traffic in front of me for the entire 20 Miles. We were topless as the weather was 65F and sunny, I may have exceeded the posted 45 Mph speed limit, as my co driver clocked the trip at only around 33 minutes:D Great Drive.
Only about 15 minutes behind us the Cobra drivers were assaulted by swarms of gnat like flies that blew in from the lake, and take over the area for about a week every spring. Good Timing!

Peter tried to take a couple of short videos, but I do not know how to attach them, sorry

Then gas up and off to the hotel in Charlevoix MI. Not an issue finding 93 Octane in the Lower Peninsula. In the Upper it was almost non existent!

Lake Shore from the Hotel

We had a good meal with bench racing at the hotel restaurant, with maybe 1 to many beers again. On a bad note, the Black Lexus Coupe, was run into by a very High young lady that could not figure out why his car was there when she was turning left? He was going straight thru the intersection at about 25 MPH. No one was hurt, and after some applications of a large pry bar, a dead blow hammer, and some duct tape, it was drivable and he was able to continue. At about the same time on a different side street I curbed my right front wheel on a curb and scuffed both the S/E wheel and the bottom of the front facia. My fault. But nothing serious.

Day 4, started out in Charlevoix then to the Haggerty car collection just outside of Traverse City, then to Northern Michigan Dragway.

To see the Haggerty Collection we took mostly 2 lane highways, probably the dullest drive of the week. It is an impressive collection near the airport, dodged a couple more Deer along the way. And 2 Deer were watching us pull in. They have a very impressive collection, with a little of every thing.

The organizer had rented Northern Michigan Dragway from 1:30-5:00pm

I was a bit concerned that they would not let me run my car, as it doesn't have a roll bar, but it was the most relaxed crew I have ever seen, 1/8 Mile Track Rental rules, No Tech, No Helmet, no Problem! Heck a couple of the convertibles ran with the top down! Never seen that before. Bracket Tree, but no Handy cap on the tree, so both sides of the Christmas Tree came down together. It was my 1st 1/8 mile track experience. I spun Badly as there was no track prep, no water in the water box. I only lost 2 races, one to the C8 Corvette, and the other to the 1940 Ford.
The Track workers were impressed by my rusty reaction times, that ranged from a Best of 0.006 on the Yellow C7 Corvette, to a worst of 0.461 vs Mini , Thelma & Louis treed me both times with 0.064 & 0.023 lights. But I passed them about 60' out. I beat both of the C7 ZO6 corvettes by taking them off the line, putting good runs together and beating them to the 1/8 mile. If it was 1/4 mile track they would have caught me as my best ET was 8.2819 that is about 13 flat in the 1/4. I was spinning badly both off the line & on both the 1-2, & 2-3 shifts. My Best MPH was 88.92 mph. Fun Time, I was surprised that I was faster than the Cobra, but later found out it has a 351 with around 300 hp, and we didn't have time to empty the cars so I don't think he had the weight advantage he should with all the cold weather gear stowed in it, along with tools and a spare tire!
The 1st 2 cars to go were the Firehawk & this Mustang, I did not race either of them.

40 Ford & Subaru

Ace ready to go down the 1/8 Mile! He was the unofficial Mascot of the Lappers, he let me get my Dog Fix in Several time that week.

Waiting for time slips, just edged out the C7 ZO6, but he was traveling at 101 MPH to my 89.8 mph at the end.

Then off to Ludington MI and some Bench racing in the Hotel lobby, good stories and alot of excuses by Corvette & Mustang drivers for why they couldn't beat a little ole Solstice! But Thema & Loiuse had the time slips to prove they took me off the line not once but twice! They were bought all the drinks they wanted!

Day 4 ended with a drive from the Dragway to Ludington MI. The Hotel, Dinner (took the driver of the Damaged Lexus out for dinner and beers) At the Hotel there was some spirited bench racing. Took a few shot in the parking lot the next morning. The great weather finally broke and we woke up to a cold drizzle and most of us decided to skip the last day of the Rally. To bad really but with just wind and rain in the forcast we headed home 1 day early.

That's it unless I can figure out how to attach the short videos from the tunnel of trees. Good week, great roads, great people, nice cars actually being driven. The weather mostly was great. But we were ready to head home.
Thanks for reading and commenting.

I would do it again if I have the time!
